USYVL opens early Spring registration

Registration for the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) Spring season is currently in open. Registration continues through December 15.

The 8 week league season at Santa Maria's Waller Park begins in April.

The USYVL is an instructional volleyball league that operates in a coed format for boys and girls ages 7-15. The organization's mission is to provide every child with a chance to learn and play volleyball in a fun, safe, supervised, low-pressure environment. Every child plays and learns the game, while emphasizing sportsmanship, cooperation and teamwork.

Spikers tryouts scheduled for Nov. 15

"There is a new game in town" is the rallying cry for a new girl's club volleyball team - The Spikers - being started in the Santa Ynez Valley. An informational session for parents and assessment for players will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Jonata Middle School gym, 401 Second St. in Buellton. Girls from 12 years old to high school seniors are invited to play on traveling and non-traveling teams.

The goal of the Central Coast Spikers is to provide an opportunity for girls to experience a high level of competitive volleyball. Experienced coaches will teach and hone the skills necessary to not only be competitive, but also win in highly skilled athletic competition.

Casino Knights 2009

On Saturday, Nov. 7 beginning at 6 p.m., St. Joseph High School will hold a fundraiser for athletics called "Casino Knights 2009."

Held in the school gym, Casino Knights will feature gaming and card tables as well as roulette with the opportunity to win several prizes.

The cover charge is $25 per person and includes $1,500 in casino chips to be used at the tables.

No-host drinks and dinner, provided by Bello Forno Catering, will be available and features gourmet pizzas made in an authentic 4,000 pound wood-fired oven.

All monies raised will benefit the sports programs at St. Joseph High.
