The second St. Joseph-Santa Ynez girls tennis match, like the first, was tight.
Unlike the first one, this one ended on the same day. There was also a different winner.
The sets ended 9-9 at Santa Ynez High School Tuesday. The home-standing Pirates, though, prevailed thanks to winning 79 games to the Knights' 69. St. Joseph edged Santa Ynez 10-8 when the teams played last month at St. Joseph.
That match began on Oct. 8 and ended, because of darkness and a postponement, on Oct. 19 with the completion of the last two doubles matches. With dusk wearing on Tuesday, Kathleen de Goede gave Santa Ynez the win by downing Jonay Jones 6-3 in a tightly contested singles match.
"Kathleen didn't win any sets up there, so that helped make a difference," Santa Ynez coach Jennifer Rasmussen said afterward Tuesday.
St. Joseph (11-1, 16-3) can do no worse than a tie for first place. The Knights' regular season is over. Santa Ynez (10-1, 16-3) hosts third-place Cabrillo at 2:30 p.m. today.
If the Pirates win today, who gets the top LPL seed for the playoffs comes down to who drew the best number in the pre-season draw. It was unknown at press time which team did.
Angie Dascanio, the Knights' No. 3 singles player, hurt her ankle during pre-match warm-ups Tuesday and couldn't play. "That was really too bad that Angie couldn't go," said Rasmussen.
Jones was Dascanio's replacement, though she played at No. 1 singles in the Knights' shuffled lineup.
Both coaches re-arranged their usual lineups, but the outcome came down to Santa Ynez taking two of the three reversals from the teams' first-match results.
One of those came when Emily Ineman downed St. Joseph's Frankie Eszes 6-3 for Eszes' first LPL loss this year. Ineman has only one LPL loss herself this season. That came to Eszes last month.
Ineman simply out-steadied Eszes Tuesday. "I definitely made less mistakes against Frankie this time," said Ineman. Eszes won her other two sets convincingly.
The athletic Ineman is a starting forward-midfielder for Santa Ynez's powerhouse girls soccer team. As she did in the first match, Ineman ran down some well-angled shots by Eszes.
This time, though, "I just took my time, thought things out more, played it point-by-point," said Ineman. "The home court advantage helped too."
Ineman's win put the Pirates in temporary command. Then, "Their No. 2 doubles team (Whitney Bouquet and Christine Noe) came back and took one on us which I didn't expect," said Rasmussen.
"They won two out of three the first time we played. They swept this time."
Bouquet and Noe gave the Knights the win in the first St. Joseph-Santa Ynez match. They finished a sweep Tuesday with a 6-0 win over Sophie Brandstatter and Sydney Tack, Santa Ynez's No. 1 pair.
Alisa Silsbee won twice at No. 2 singles. That helped the Pirates offset a sweep by Sammy White and Ellie McPike at No. 1 doubles for St. Joseph.
White and McPike, who are unbeaten in LPL matches, edged Kylie Petersen and Bianca Capasso 7-6 (4) in the last match to finish, but de Goede had wrapped the match up for Santa Ynez a minute or two before.
Silsbee played singles her freshman year, singles the first part of her sophomore year, and then doubles the last part. She's back to playing singles, which she prefers.
"I like singles better, because you get to do more running around," said Silsbee. She is used to running around. Silsbee is a starting midfielder for Santa Ynez's girls soccer team.
"Besides," Silsbee said of her preference for singles. "You only have yourself. If you make a mistake you just let yourself down, not your partner."
As usual Tuesday, the match between the LPL powerhouses was a nailbiter. As usual the league championship was at stake. One of these teams has won, or the teams have shared, the LPL title for at least the last several years.
The Pirates weren't exactly 100 percent healthy Tuesday. Heather Vellekamp, who played at No. 2 doubles with Mylee Curtis, played with a huge brace on her right leg. She and Curtis went 1-2 Tuesday.
"Heather partially tore her ACL in September and then aggravated it again two weeks ago," said Rasmussen. "It's match-to-match with her as to whether or not she can play."
First-year St. Joseph coach Julie Epps said, "We knew it was going to be close. I was very proud of the way our girls came in and fought. I thought they played very well."
Rasmussen said, "I thought their girls were up on us early, playing as if they wanted it more and I thought our girls, like the last time, looked a little intimidated.
"Then our players settled in, and they were fine."
The LPL finals take place Friday at Hancock College and the Minami Center. Starting time is 9 a.m.
Templeton 9, Lompoc 9 (80-69 Templeton, games)
The Braves (2-8-1 LPL) fell short in this Los Padres League match at Lompoc by 11 games.
Korina Esqueda and Asucena Villalobos swept three sets for Lompoc at No. 1 doubles. Ashley Branson and Jessica Cosio earned two doubles points. Sameeha Husayn won two singles matches.
Cabrillo 12, Morro Bay 6
Doubles teams carried the Conquistadores (8-3 LPL) to a league victory at Morro Bay (1-9-1).
Cabrillo took eight of the nine doubles sets. The tandems of Elke and Nikki Piertsegaele, and Ashley Bowman and Bree Piper Williams all swept.
Atascadero 12, Righetti 6
The Greyhounds (6-6 PAC-7 League) tied the Warriors (6-6 PAC-7) for fourth place and the league's final guaranteed playoff spot as both teams' regular seasons ended.
The teams split their season series, so whichever team drew a better number in the pre-season draw will likely determine that fourth playoff spot. At press time, it was unknown which team that was.
Laura Wong and Lauren Nguyen swept three doubles sets. Katy Veroski won twice for Righetti which was without Aya Kasai, its number two singles player.
The PAC-7 League Tournament starts at 10 a.m. Thursday at Nipomo. The tourney will conclude Friday at the same place.
Nipomo 12, Pioneer Valley 6
Jenny Cardenas and Tessa Underwood swept three doubles sets as the Titans (2-10 PAC-7 League) finished their regular season with a win at home. Bianca Grant won both her sets, and Gina Armini won two of her three. Caitlyn Brown swept three singles sets for the Panthers (0-12, 2-13).
Santa Maria 17, Coast Union 1
Danielle Rivas swept three singles sets and lost just three games in the process as the Saints (2-12) rolled to a non-league win at the Minami Center.
Saints Kyla Johnson and Eunice Gonzalez lost only three games as they swept three doubles sets.
