Brunell moves up to St. Joseph AD
After five years, Dave Brunell returns as St. Joseph High School Athletic Director, a press release issued by the school Tuesday stated.
Former athletic director John Osborne will become the assistant athletic director and game manager. The press release said Osborne is cutting back on his schedule but will be a baseball coach along with his other duties.
Brunell was the school/s athletic director from 1982-99. Most recently, he was the school/s Director of Public Relations and Facility Manager. The release stated he will continue with those duties and be the school/s head freshman football coach.

Nipomo to play at own home in 2004
Nipomo High School/s football players will not be boarding buses for home games this season.
NHS Athletic Director Dwight MacDonald said in a phone interview Tuesday that "the foundation was put in (Tuesday)," for bleachers at the Nipomo football field.
"The bleachers are in the parking lot, disassembled," for the moment, MacDonald said. But, "They/ll be ready by the first home game. Well before then, in fact."
The lights at the field have been up for awhile. Last year, Nipomo/s teams played their home football games at Arroyo Grande High/s Doug Hitchen Stadium.
Nipomo/s freshman football team is set to play the inaugural game at Nipomo/s stadium Sept. 16. The varsity will play there the next night, against Pacifica of Oxnard at 7 p.m.
The varsity/s season opener is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 against Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara at Santa Barbara City College. The Titans play at Santa Paula Sept. 10 at the same time.
Youth Softball
Destiny undefeated in National Tourney
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. 7 Destiny, a 16-and-under softball travel team consisting primarily of Central Coast players, is 2-0 in the ASA National Tournament.
Destiny edged the Oregon Reign 2-1 Tuesday. Monday night, Brooke Brockett of Cabrillo High School hurled a one-hitter as the locals defeated the Atlanta Thunderbirds 3-0 in the first round.
The Reign scored in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday. With a runner on third base and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, McKenna Garife of Lompoc hit a high chopper which the second baseman threw away. The tying run scored.
In the last of the 10th, Garife lined a hit far over the left fielder/s head, and the winning run scored.
Marissa Martinez of St. Joseph pitched the first three innings for Destiny. Jennifer Sisco of Bakersfield relieved her in the fourth, then Brockett relieved Sisco and picked up her second tournament win.
The Thunderbirds/ hit Monday night came with two outs in the seventh and final inning. Brockett had one of Destiny/s 10 hits.
Destiny/s next game is at 8 a.m. Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Central Coast Rebels/ 18-and-under softball squad starts play in the Western Nationals at Sacramento today.
Youth Basketball
Golden Dukes play in Las Vegas
Two Golden Dukes age group basketball teams placed in the top three in their divisions at the ARC National Youth Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas recently.
The Golden Dukes squads are made up of players from the Central Coast and are coached by Ron Regalado and Doug Sims.
The Golden Dukes 12-and-under team lost by seven points to Pasadena in the championship game. The Golden Dukes 10-and-under squad lost by eight to Santa Monica-based All American Hoops in the semifinals.
Teams from throughout the United States competed in the ARC basketball tourneys.
Soccer
Hancock to hold team tryouts
Tryouts begin Aug. 16 for all those interested in playing men/s or women/s soccer for Hancock College. Call Hancock men/s soccer coach Al Garcia at 967-0670 for more information.
After a one-year hiatus, the Hancock College Men/s Soccer Tournament is back. The tourney takes place Sept. 3-5 at Hancock. Some of the teams set to compete include host Hancock, Ohlone of Fremont, Taft, and squads from Washington and San Jose.
Atletico Madrid looking for new players
The Atletico Madrid USA, girls U14 soccer team is looking to fill its last few roster spots.
Interested players should come to one of the following practice sessions: Hancock College on Mondays from 6-8 p.m.; Sunrise Park (across from K-Mart) on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. or Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.- 12 p.m.
A parent or guardian must be present at the first practice session to sign a release form. Girls born on or after Aug. 1, 1990 are eligible.

Nipomo Cowboys workouts begin
The Nipomo Cowboys football program begins its "hell week," next Monday.
Workouts that week run from 5-7 p.m. at the Nipomo football field. The Cowboys still have openings in their J2 and Senior divisions. Sign-ups will continue at the football field during "hell week."
The J2 Division is for players 10-13 years old. The Senior Division is for players 11-14 years old.
Required J2 weights are 116-170 for 10-year-olds; 111-165 for 11-year-olds; 91-135 for 12-year-olds; and 96-115 for 13-year-olds. Required Senior weights are 166-200 for 11-year-olds; 136-190 for 12-year-olds; 116-180 for 13-year-olds; and 90-160 for 14-year-olds.

Longtime Cal Poly coach Lisa Boyer resigns
SAN LUIS OBISPO 7 Lisa Boyer, who guided Cal Poly/s softball team to 436 victories and five post-season appearances during her 16 years at the helm, has resigned as head coach effective Aug. 31, according to a press release the school issued Tuesday.
Boyer will be a coordinator with Cal Poly/s Department of Continuing Education and Conference Services and Training, the release stated.
"This was a very difficult decision on many levels, especially because I enjoyed working so much with the student athletes," Boyer said. She was 436-377 at Cal Poly.
Cal Poly Interim Director of Athletics Alison Cone said a search for a new softball coach will begin immediately.
