There the fifth-game lead was, dangling out there like a carrot like a stick.

Hancock College/s volleyball team couldn/t quite grab it.

The Bulldogs tied the score at 12 when a Bakersfield shot went wide. But Brittni Fink/s next serve went into the net, and the Renegades eventually pulled out a 28-30, 30-13, 30-20, 28-30, 15-11 victory at Joe White Memorial Gymnasium Tuesday night.

The match which took two hours, eight minutes, was an inter-Western State Concference one. The Renegades (4-2) are in the WSC South Division. The Bulldogs (1-3) are in the WSC North.

After Jackie Jacobs hit a shot long to give Bakersfield a 12-10 margin in game five, Megan McCalip smacked a kill to pull the Bulldogs within 12-11.

But outside hitter Doneice Woody wrapped up the match for the Renegades by smashing a kill. Woody and Toni Alvarez plagued the Bulldogs all night with their hitting.

The Bulldogs had some hard luck in the last game. The Renegades/ Jill Riddle knocked a shot that hit the net hard but rolled over onto the Bulldogs side for Bakersfield/s 14th point.

Though her players couldn/t quite pull out a win, first-year Hancock coach Heather Allen seemed happy with the way they played.

"Last week when we went there, we came out flat," she said. The Renegades swept the Bulldogs in three games at Bakersfield last week.

"This time we made some adjustments, defensively, and also running more slide sets with Amy (Philipps)," said Allen.

Philipps and Alyssa Giorgi had nine kills each. McCalip sparked the Bulldogs to their game one and game four wins. She was Hancock/s kill leader with 14.

"Megan had an excellent match tonight," said Allen. Jacobs and Fink gave Hancock strong defense, and Jacobs made 20 digs Tuesday night.

No one led by more than three points in the fourth game.

With the game tied 21-21, the Bulldogs took the lead for good when Alvarez served one into the net.

Philipps and McCalip terminated Renegades possessions twice each with kills. Jesslyn Tilley finally put the game away for Hancock with another kill.

Alvarez gave the Renegades the first point of the last game with a block, and the Bulldogs never could take command though they made several good saves.

Hancock trailed most of the first game, but Courtney Peterson put the Bulldogs ahead 23-21 with seven consecutive service points. Jacobs gave the game to the Bulldogs with a tip.

The Bulldogs were never in contention the second or third games, which Woody, Alvarez, Riddle and Lily Banks dominated with their hitting. The Bulldogs rebounded in game four.

Tilley made six blocks Tuesday night. Philipps had four. Hancock setter Jessica Quandt had 46 assists.

The Bulldogs host College of the Canyons at 7 p.m. next Tuesday in another inter-WSC match. Hancock/s WSC North opener is Oct. 19 at Oxnard.
