Righetti High/s baseball team/s run output against its across-the-street rival matched its hit output Saturday.
Thus, the Warriors swept St. Joseph in a non-league doubleheader at Righetti. The Warriors took the first game 9-3 and the second 5-1.
Righetti (6-2) had eight hits the first game and six hits the second. St. Joseph is 0-7.
The Warriors/ relief pitchers did not get much work Saturday. In fact, they did not get much work all week.
"The starters were so dominant, the relievers just didn/t get a chance to get in much," said Righetti coach Eric Albright. "Rawlin Powell got in an inning Thursday, and David Lohman pitched an inning and two thirds today." Ben Grover went the distance in Righetti/s win Tuesday.
No relief pitcher made an appearance for Righetti in game two Saturday. Senior Josh Thomas tamed the Knights on a complete-game, 88-pitch, four hitter. The second game took just one hour, 27 minutes.
Righetti starter David Lohman worked 5 1/3 innings in the opener.
Though Albright obviously liked what he saw from his starters, "What happens when they falter and the relievers have to come in, and they haven/t been on the field in two weeks?," said Albright.
"We/ll get them ready," he vowed. "We/ll get them in the pen."
Everyone on both teams needs to be ready now, because Righetti and St. Joseph both open play in their leagues Tuesday. Righett is at Atascadero at 3:30 p.m. in a PAC-5 League opener, and St. Joseph plays at Santa Ynez at the same time in both teams/ Los Padres League debut.
"The defense and hitting have been really good for us 7 the pitching is secondary right now," Thomas said. Righetti/s defense wasn/t good all the time Saturday 7 the Warriors made three errors the first game and two the second.
Righetti had enough offense to make its errors inconsequential. Righetti got all the runs that it would need in the second inning. With two outs, the Warriors collected three consecutive singles. The first two were RBI hits by Chris Mathews and Tim Trefts.
Blaine Wilson gave Righetti its last run with a solo homer in the sixth. He hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning of the first game. The Warriors broke that one open with a five-run sixth.
Though Righetti was the team that swept Saturday, St. Joseph/s Bobby Fystro sounded like the happier coach. Sophomore Vince Dupuis/ pitching performance was a big reason why.
Dupuis held the heavy hitting Warriors to six hits, and not all of those hits were hard hit.
"He pitched a great game," said Fystro. "He got called up from the junior varsity for today.
"He won a varsity spot today."
Fystro figured his hitters would be up against it against Thomas, who struck out seven. "He/s a great pitcher," Fystro said. Thomas consistently got his fastball over low in the strike zone, and his off-speed stuff was working too.
St. Joseph/s hitters helped him out by golfing at some low pitches. Brian McConkey singled in the fifth for the Knights/ first hit.
Brian Pease/s two-runs single in a three-run sixth in the opener was the Knights/ most timely hit. St. Joseph had no extra base hits.
Albright didn/t seem to think the Warriors/ play was as dull as the overcast weather that ushered in the first day of spring, but he didn/t think Righetti/s play was razor sharp either.
"I thought we came out a little flat today," he said after telling his team, "This performance today won/t win our league."
