St. Joseph tops Righetii at Warrior Stadium

Righetti won most of the events Wednesday at RHS/ Warrior Stadium.

St. Joseph/s boys and girls won the track meet.

The Knights/ boys had 94 points to second-place Righetti/s 67 and Santa Maria/s 15. St. Joseph/s girls outscored Righetti 79-70. Santa Maria scored 15 points.

"I told (my athletes) that there was more to it than winning events," said St. Joseph coach Greg Sarkisian. The meet was the season opener for all three teams.

The Knights had 10 second-places in the girls division and nine more in the boys/.

Freshman Daina Tubbs had one of those second place girls finishes for the Knights. She finished second to Righetti/s Monica Pulido in the 1,600 meters, then took the 3,200 in 13:07.83.

Ashley Philipps won twice for the Knights, taking the shot put at 34-10 and the discus at 103-0.

Tina Vincent and Jordan Jackson took double wins for the Warriors. Vincent won the 400 in 1:04.99 and the 800 in 2:43.06. Jackson sprinted to victory in the 100 (13.09) and the 200 (28.31).

Phillip Adam tripled for the Knights/ boys, winning the shot put at 48-2 1/4, the 110 high hurdles in 15.88 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 42.80.

The Knights withstood a triple by Righetti/s Chris Brooms. Brooms won the 100 in 11.52, the long jump at 19-3 1/2 and the triple jump at 39-6.

Golf

Saint Joseph 403, Righetti 419, SB 424

St. Joseph defeated Righetti and Santa Barbara in a three-way non-league match at the Santa Maria Country Club in a season opener.

Righetti/s Kyle Waterbury, a sophomore competing in his first varsity match, was the medalist with a 74. Bryan Woodruff led St. Joseph to victory with a 75. Ryan McConnell shot a 78 for the Knights.

Bryan Woodruff shot 81 on the par 72 course which some coaches and players said was playing tougher than usual, probably because of the recent rains. Mark Castillejo rounded out the Knights scoring with an 82.

Daniel Miller shot a 77 for Righetti. Eric Barnard had an 82, Jimmy Powell shot a 91 and Morgan Fippinger carded a 95.

Andrew Hernandez led Santa Barbara with an 80.

College Softball

SYLMAR 7 The Free Spirit broke the game open with a five-run second inning.

Crystal Garcia went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs who dropped to 2-2, 3-8 with this Western State Conference interdivision defeat.

The Bulldogs play at Bakersfield at 5 p.m. today in another interconference game.

Charity Golf

Marian/s annual Simas/ Fly Memorial set for March 29

Marian Medical Center/s annual Leland /Butch/ Simas/Felix Fly, M.D. memorial golf tournament will be played on Monday, March 29 at the Santa Maria Country Club.

The tournament honors the memory of two longtime hospital supporters while raising funds that are used to benefit the medical needs of the people of the Santa Maria Valley.

5th Annual Olde Towne Nipomo Golf Classic

The Olde Towne Nipomo Association is holding its 5th annual golf tournament at the Blacklake Golf Course on Saturday, March 27.

A barbecue dinner will be held at the Blacklake Clubhouse following the tournament.
