Santa Maria Club competing at Junior Nationals

ORLANDO, Fla. 7 Santa Maria/s Dena Lougee picked up an 11th place finish Wednesday in the 500-meter freestyle race at swimming/s Junior Olympics in Orlando, Florida.

Lougee, one of several local teenagers competing at the Junior Nationals, swam the 500 in 4:59.22.

The swim club opened the competition Tuesday with Lougee finishing 19th in the 1000-meter freestyle with a time of 10:19:55.

Ryan Drom placed 35th in the 1000-free with a time of 9:41.50.

Lougee also qualified for the consolation finals in the 400-meter Individual Medley. Lougee finished 14th with a time of 4:27.71.

Megab Zimmer, who also swam in the event, wcame in 27th with a time of 4:31.28.

Samantha Kephart finished 28th in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:07.84.

More than 600 of the nation/s finest young swimmers are taking part in the Junior Nationals.

The competition runs through Friday.

Golf

Annual Spring Twilite League forming

The Sunset Ridge Golf Center is starting up its annual Wednesday Night Spring Twilite League.

Teams will play Wednesday nights beginning April 7 and running through May 26.

You can get your team set up by visiting the Pro Shop at 1424 Fairway Drive or by calling 347-1070.

Free junior clinic at Sunset Ridge

PGA golf professional Raul Quezada is conducting a free junior golf clinic at the Sunset Ridge Golf Center on Saturday, March 27 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

All boys and girls, ages 17 and under, are welcome to attend.

Juniors 11-years old and younger will receive instruction from 11 a.m. until noon. Juniors 12-and up will have their session from 12:30 until 2 p.m.

The clinic is open to both beginning and experienced players.

Beginning players will learn the basic skills needed to play the game of golf. More advanced players will learn to improve their technique in all areas of the game.

Soccer

SMVYSA getting ready for 2004

The Santa Maria Valley Youth Soccer Association (SMVYSA) is gearing up for registration for the 2004 season.

Sign-ups will be held every Saturday from April 24 through June 26 at the snack bar at Adams Field, across the street from the Minami Center. Registration will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Returning players should receive registration forms by mail. If you do not receive the form in the mail then you will have to attend one of the Saturday registration dates.

The season will run from September through November.

Lawn Bowling

Open house at the Santa Maria Green

The Santa Maria Lawn Bowling Club is having an Open House/Demonstration on Saturday, April 3. Anyone interested in learning the game of Lawn Bowling is welcome to attend.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. with an explanation of the game of lawn bowling followed by a demonstration of how the game is played.

Lawn Bowling is a low impact exercise, appropriate for all ages, and is fun to play. Please wear flat-soled shoes and come early for coffee and donuts.

The club/s next scheduled tournament will be held on Saturday, April 17. It will be a mixed pairs tournament.

The Santa Maria Lawn Bowling Club is sponsored by the City Recreation and Parks Department and is located at 420 South McClelland Street, across from the library and adjacent to the police station.
