As the third boys event in this PAC-5 League swim meet was taking place, Righetti boys and girls coach Kyle Shaffer smiled ruefully.
"Not a good day," he said.
San Luis Obispo/s squads were in the process of routing his. The Tigers/ boys team won 138-45, and the San Luis Obispo/s girls squad prevailed 134-45 at the YMCA pool Friday.
"San Luis Obispo has the best team in the league this year," Shaffer said, referring to both Tigers squads. "No one in our league can touch them because of their depth."
That depth showed Friday as the Tigers squads ran their records to 1-0 in the PAC-5 League and 3-0 overall. Righetti/s boys are 0-1, 2-2. The Righetti girls are 0-1, 0-4.
Junior Katlin Phillips racked up Righetti/s lone win Friday. She took the girls 100 yard butterfly in 1:07.10.
"I would have liked to have gone a little faster, but I felt strong in the pool," she said. "My best time/s a 1:03, but for this early in the season, (my time today/s) all right."
"We/ve had some good swims," Shaffer said. "Early in the season, that/s what it/s all about."
Besides Phillips/ win, Shaffer said the best swims of the day for his team came from the boys side. Greg McGilvray swam CIF consideration times in the 200 individual medley (2:11) and the 100 free (52.1).
Righetti/s 200 medley and 200 free relay teams also swam CIF consideration times. Josh Jones, Cory Yamashiro, McGilvray and Noah Smith swam for the 200 medley relay team. Mayer Olivares led off for the 200 free relay team. Yamashiro, McGilvray and Smith swam the other legs.
Speaking of CIF consideration times, San Luis Obispo/s boys had a raft of them. Seven to be exact.
Ian James won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke in 2:08.54 and 59.13 respectively, swimming CIF consideration times in both. Stefan Thom had a sprint double for the Tigers. He won the 50 free in 23.69 and the 100 free in 51.97.
Besides swimming on two winning relay teams, San Luis Obispo/s Claire Jacobson was a double individual event winner in the girls meet. She won the 50 free in 26.26 and the 100 free in 58.81. Her 50 free mark was good for CIF consideration.
Jacobson/s 50 free time was the only CIF consideration mark of the girls meet.
Shaffer said Righetti/s boys were missing two of their better swimmers. "Scott Turton made our zone national water polo team, and he/s in the national tryouts. Mike Tucker/s ill.
"Scott usually swims in the 50 and the 100, and Mike swims the 50 and the 200 free. (Their absences) affected the relays too."
