In the third inning Tuesday, Maricopa/s Sandra Calvillo hit a hard ground ball to Valley Christian Academy pitcher Christine Regalado. Regalado knocked the ball down and threw to first baseman Lara Hertzog in time for the out.

In the fifth Maricopa/s Kodie Brown hit a dribbler to Hertzog, who stepped on the bag in plenty of time for the out.

Other than a few fouls, the balls hit by Calvillo and Brown represented the only contact the Indians made all afternoon against Regalado.

The VCA freshman hurled her first no-hitter of the year, a perfect game, and struck out 13 as the Lions won this Coast Valley League game in a 19-0 rout at VCA. Umpires called the game after the top of the fifth because of the run rule.

Regalado threw VCA/s second consecutive no-hitter in a league game. Her sister Cynthia threw a no-hitter against Shandon last week, but an error let in an Outlaws run.

The Lions are 4-0 in the CVL and 6-1 overall. Maricopa is 1-3, 8-3. VCA plays at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Cuyama to close out its first round of CVL games.

Regalado seemed happy enough with the no-hitter but she also said, "Actually, my control has been better the last few games," than it was Tuesday.

VCA catcher Regina Garza said Regalado hit her spots well enough. "She/s real consistent," Garza said.

Regalado didn/t throw a steady diet of fastballs. "I want her to mix it up, go in and out,// said Garza. Maricopa/s hitters swung and missed at some Regalado rise balls that were above the strike zone.

"That really helped her out a lot," Garza said with a smile. She chuckled. "Sometimes she threw the rise ball when I didn/t even call for it."

Tuesday marked yet another game when VCA/s fielders spent most of their time preparing themselves for balls that never came. Christine Regalado has been the Lions/ pitcher in every game except one and, "I think she/s been in double figures in strikeouts in every game," said VCA coach Stan Bickley.

"With Christine, our defense has not had to meet a test much," Bickley said. "But with Lara at first base, Nancy (Murphy) at second, Brittani (Datu) at shortstop and Cynthia at third, this is the best infield I/ve had.

"They do have to stay on their toes though and not get lulled to sleep when Christine/s throwing all those strikeouts."

Christine Regalado tripled in a six-run VCA first inning. Besides her pitching, things were also easy for the Lions because Maricopa made seven errors. Eight of VCA/s runs were earned.

Regalado scored four times. She also had three hits and drove in two runs. Serena Gomez drove in two runs for VCA in the first inning with a single. Michelle Rivas singled twice and scored twice.

"I was very happy with the way we played all the way around today," Bickley said

Ricky Chan picked up the Saints/ only singles point. Santa Maria/s doubles tandems of Alex Martinez and Rey Sagisi, Jose Angulo and Justin Dolores, and Steve Molinelli and Paul Roman all won two of their three sets. The Saints play at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Nipomo.
