Both coaches figured this track meet would be close. It wasn/t.
Sophomore Philip Adam led a 1-2-3 sweep in the boys 110 high hurdles, winning in 15.7 to help St. Joseph/s boys break open a meet that was tight early. The Knights defeated Los Padres League arch rival Lompoc 89-47 on a windy, cold Thursday afternoon at Righetti High/s Warrior Stadium.
Lompoc/s 1,600 meter relay team of Laura Covarrubias, Ariana and Carrie Fabing and DeLoren Tullis clinched the meet for the Braves/ girls by winning in 4:24.9. Lompoc/s girls won 75-61.
St. Joseph/s boys are 2-0. St. Joseph/s girls are 1-1. Lompoc/s girls are 3-0 and the Braves/ boys are 2-1.
"Our guys did very well today," St. Joseph coach Greg Sarkisian, who said the week before that he expected the meet to be a nail-biter. "They came through the way they should have."
"Going over it in my mind, every day this week, I thought it was going to be really close," said Lompoc coach Ed Herrmann.
Lompoc/s boys won the first event, the 400 relay, but Billy Ader got the Knights boys rolling in the next even by getting the best of the Braves/ tough distance crew. Ader edged Lompoc/s Eduardo Ramos, winning in 4:46.2 to Ramos/ 4:46.8. St. Joseph/s Bryant Loung, who later won a windy 800 going away in 2:03.9, was third in 4:46.9.
Ader gave the Knights a distance double by sprinting away from a Lompoc runner in the last straightaway of the 3,200 to win in 10:33.8. St. Joseph/s Greg Reynolds won the long jump (21-0) and triple jump (41-1 1/2).
The Braves/ boys were Boo Jackson-less Thursday. Jackson is one of the best jumpers in the area. Herrmann said Thursday that Jackson was on vacation with his family in Hawaii.
"Having Boo sure would have helped," Herrmann said, though he added, "St. Joseph/s guys did a great job."
"Them not having Boo obviously made a big difference," Sarkisian said. "Although I/m not sure Boo would have prevented us from winning."
He would not have. Even if Jackson had won all three jumps, the Knights would have won with points to spare.
Both coaches were pleased with their girls teams.
"I thought our girls were going to get slaughtered," Sarkisian said. "We came within 15 points. I/m very proud of them."
St. Joseph won the girls LPL title last year.
Adam was a big reason the Knights/ boys won going away. The 2003 CIF hurdles finalist won the 300 hurdles in 41.7 and the shot put at 49-7 3/4 to go with his 110 hurdles win.
Adam blasted through the first part of the 300 race and appeared headed for a grand time. He slowed greatly the last 20 meters or so and settled for a good one.
"I was tired," he said. Approaching the last hurdle, "I tried to shorten my stride, but it didn/t work. So I had to stutter-step."
Freshman Julio Ortega impressed Sarkisian and his St. Joseph teammates alike. He passed Lompoc/s Nick Martin in the last few yards to finish second in the varsity 800.
Lompoc/s Donald White/s 22.5 200 was an impressive time on such a windy day. Loung/s 800 was also impressive. He opened a huge lead early and maintained his pace well.
The Knights/ girls couldn/t overcome the Fabings. Ariana won the 800 in 2:37.9 and the 1,600 in 5:44.8. Carrie took the 3,200 in 12:35.6. Then came their legs for the winning 1,600 relay team.
Alyssa Agin did pull off a sprint double for the Knights. She won two close races, the 100 in 13.0 and the 200 in 27.3.

The Eagles (8-3, 3-1 PAC-5) scored five runs in the first inning and one in the fourth.
Arroyo Grande/s Brandon King started the scoring frenzy in the first with a nice blooper to center field that scored Erik Morrison. King tagged up on Jason Wysong/s pop fly for a 2-0 lead.
Then, Chris McCall hit a hard shot to third base that was too hot for the Tigers to handle bringing home Gilbert Buenrostro and Gutierrez. Josh Mallory scored the final run of the inning when he stole third base and came home on an overthrow at third.
