Hancock/s men/s tennis team just missed collecting its first win of the season Friday.

The Bulldogs (0-9 WSC, 0-10 overall) lost a Western State Conference home match 5-4 to Santa Barbara. The Vaqueros are 4-5, 4-5.

Hancock/s top two singles players, Davis Best and Lewis Smith, both won. Best defeated Quasim Kuhn 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 and Smith downed Ian Suwara 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.

The Bulldogs collected forfeit wins at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles. Best and Smith just missed winning at No. 1 doubles, losing 8-6 to Kuhn and Nicolas Santibanez.

At Santa Barbara, Hancock/s women rebounded from their first loss of the season, 5-4 at Cuesta Thursday, to sweep the Vaqueros 9-0 in a WSC match.

Hancock/s women are 9-1, 10-2.

The Bulldogs/ lineup of Lori Valadez, Monica Krier, Carlene Holst, Clairol Lozano, Carly Barnett and Amanda Urias in singles, and Valadez-Holst, Krier-Lozano and Barnett-Urias in doubles swept through Friday. Scores were unavailable at press time.

Cuesta 5, Hancock 4 (Thursday)

Jessie Ritchie reversed things on Valadez at No. 1 singles, and that was enough for the Cougars to snap the Bulldogs/ 18-match winning streak that dated back to last year.

The result left the teams with identical records as of Friday.

Ritchie, whose only loss this year was a three-setter to Valadez in the Bulldogs/ 5-4 win in the first round, defeated Valadez 7-5, 6-2. Every other result Thursday was the same as when the two teams played the first time.

Krier won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 for Hancock. Holst won 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3.

Valadez and Holst won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Krier and Lozano prevailed 8-6 at No. 2.

Barnett and Julie San Jose rallied from 5-2 down at No. 3, but eventually lost 9-7.

"It/s hard to maintain that level after a really close match," Hancock coach Ginny Barnett said. "It was a good match. Our No. 3 doubles, who lost 8-1 the first time, came all the way back before they lost."

Baseball (Thursday)

At Hancock, the Bulldogs (7-3, 10-6) re-gained first place in the WSC with a five-run splurge in the seventh inning.
