O’Keefe shot a personal-best 79 to help the Warriors finish in third place and advance to the Southern Section Team Final.

For the past three years, the Righetti girls golf team has finished one spot out of advancing past the first round of the CIF playoffs.

This year, with the Warriors head coach Tracy Davis feeling ill waiting as the final scores were tallied, the scores were posted and the Warriors learned they were moving on.

Behind the stellar play of Makayla Mier and Dani O'Keefe, Righetti, from the PAC-7 League, placed third with a team score of 423 to qualify for the first time in the Northern Team Divisional tournament at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande Thursday.

"My stomach is churning right now," said Davis after learning the team's fate. "I've been the first team out of the top three times.

"So I was seeing that happening again because it was looking close again - so I started feeling sick."

The top four teams from the tourney, that began at 10 a.m. and finished around 4 p.m., qualified out of a field of 22 teams that featured 132 players.

"Two times we finished fifth and the one time when they took six, we came in seventh," Davis continued. "Making the cut and even coming in third was amazing."

Newhall Hart (386), Westlake (393), Righetti (423) and Simi Valley Royal (424) will move on to the CIF Southern Section Team Final which will be played on Monday at Mountain Meadows Golf Course in Pomona.

Santa Ynez (435) and St. Joseph (452) representing the Los Padres League finished seventh and eight overall. Arroyo Grande was 13th with a 473.

Westlake, while finishing second overall, had the top two individual players. Danielle Kang shot a six under par 66 on the par 72 course, followed by teammate Lauren Diaz with a 69. The remainder of the top five featured a familiar name. LPL individual MVP Danielle Gillaspy from St. Joseph finished tied with Nikki Prichard (Hart) in fourth with a 74, three strokes behind Allison Lee of Valencia.

The top finishers for the other local teams were Maddison Shean (Santa Ynez) with a 77 and Kristina Hansson (Arroyo Grande) at 79.

Mier led the Warriors with a 77 and O'Keefe, who has been playing her best the last few weeks, shot a 79.

"I shot my personal best today," O'Keefe said. "It was surprising for me because this was a major tournament for me and I'm really happy that I played my best."

Davis was very pleased at the scores because several members of her team have been fighting a bug lately.

"The girls were kind of the walking wounded - they've all been pretty sick," she explained. "Dani was my only healthy one today and she played phenomenal - lights out. She had the round of her life."

While O'Keefe had a very good day, she realized that one player was not enough.

"It was more of a team effort," O'Keefe explained. "I wasn't as worried about myself like I did Tuesday (at CIF individuals), but I wanted my team to do well.

"I focused on doing my best, but also encouraged the girls on my team to do well."

Davis appreciated the team effort as well, considering they were not all healthy.

"They played very well for being sick girls," Davis said. "I think they did great even though they weren't happy, because they expect better of themselves, and Victoria (Huber) broke 100 for the first time."

Next up Mountain Meadows.

"We played it last year in the second round of individuals so Mareon (Smit) and Makayla played it last year," Davis said. "It's a very difficult course with a lot of challenges."

The scheduled tee time for the Final will be at 7:30 a.m.
