Hancock roughed up again by Cuesta

SAN LUIS OBISPO 7 On Saturday for Hancock College pitchers, it was bad.

On Tuesday it was worse.

Cuesta hitters had 14 runs on 16 hits at Hancock in a 14-9 win Saturday. Turned out, the Cougars were just getting warmed up.

Cuesta shellacked Bulldogs pitching for 22 hits in a 19-3 rout in a Western State Conference North Division game at Cuesta Tuesday. The Cougars are 5-7, 7-11. Hancock is 7-5, 10-8. The teams have split the first four games of their five-game series.

The results left every WSC North team within two games of each other. Hancock has a share of first place.

St. Joseph alumnus Dustin Kelly had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Cougars. Tim Regnier, another St. Joseph alum, went 3-for-3, scored a run, drove in two more and doubled. Regnier played for Hancock last year.

Besides Hancock/s usually reliable pitching getting pounded for the second consecutive time, the Bulldogs/ usually reliable defense made four errors.

Jimmy Van Ostrand had two hits for Hancock. Meanwhile, Bulldogs starting pitcher Andrew Jones lasted only one inning. Cuesta starter Justin Klipp (4-0) pitched seven innings to earn the win.

Softball

AHC 11-11, L.A. Pierce 5-6

WOODLAND HILLS 7 The Bulldogs (5-8, 6-16) swept a WSC North doubleheader from Los Angeles Pierce 11-5, 11-6.

Stephanie Silva went 3-for-4 for Hancock in the opener, and Nika Miller bolstered winning pitcher Crystal Garcia (4-4) with a three-run triple in the third inning. Garcia and Silva doubled.

In the second game, Dalia Daniels (1-3) earned her first win of the year. Garcia relieved her in the sixth inning.

Silva hit a grand slam home run in the sixth. Daniels helped herself by going 4-for-5 with a double. Miller tripled. Hancock plays at Cuesta at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Men/s tennis

Bakersfield 8, Hancock 1

BAKERSFIELD 7 Number one singles player Davis Best defeated Frank Mena 6-3, 6-2 for the Bulldogs/ only point in this WSC match.

Hancock is 1-10, 1-11. Hancock College Athletic Director Scott Cathcart confirmed Tuesday that the Bulldogs picked up a forfeit win against Santa Barbara City College.

Women/s tennis

Cuesta 6, Bakersfield 3

SAN LUIS OBISPO 7 Jennifer White, the Cougars/ No. 2 singles player, was out with an injury but Cuesta (10-1 WSC) still clinched the match in singles play.

Cuesta/s Jessie Ritchie, Breanne Greer, Mary Monley, Jenny Main and Kendra Mass all won in straight sets.
