NIPOMO 7 Nipomo girls volleyball head coach Claudia Trudeau didn/t just want her team to beat the visiting Lompoc Braves on Tuesday.
She wanted her team to play with focus the entire match, she said.
No one would have blamed the Titans if their minds started to wander or if they got bored during their dominating 25-12, 25-9, 25-8 win. But one play in the second game showed the Titans had accomplished Trudeau/s goal.
With Nipomo leading 21-8 and about to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match, senior setter Leigh Stephenson charged after a wayward pass. Her momentum carried her into the Titan bench, and if it weren/t for her seated teammates, would have sent her toppling over the metal folding chairs. But Stephenson wasn/t just able to get the ball back into play. She ran onto the court and got the assist, one of 21 on the night.
"That was great," Trudeau said about the play. "They played tonight like they were hungry the whole game."
Junior outside hitter Krystal Bozarth led the Titans with eight kills. Senior middle blocker Michelle Jost had seven kills, while junior outside hitter Sarah Clark had six kills and four assists.
It wasn/t all bad news for the Braves in the loss.
"The team just wasn/t able to control their passing, but we made some good plays on defense," Lompoc head coach Don Savella said. "Alyssa Ray did a good job in her role in the back row."
Sophomore middle hitter Alyssa Mayberry and junior setter Katelyn Lynch led the Braves with 11 kills apiece.
