TODAY'S OPINIONS

  • Time to talk to family's teen driver

Drunken driving isn't something most Americans spend a lot of time thinking about - until someone in their family is the victim of an impaired driver.

  • Experience in a Superior Court judge

In the midst of all the excitement of voting for two supervisorial seats, it may be easy to overlook another important race - Superior Court judge. Whoever is elected to this position will be presiding over cases that affect our homes, families, businesses and communities in many important ways.

  • TODAY'S LETTERS

      Help economy? Stop the war

To all those who believe the economy is a more important issue than the Iraq war, I remind you the economy is the war.

      BASH success praise-worthy

On behalf of St. Joseph High School's Building A Scholastic Heritage program, we would like to thank our community for the outstanding support we received for our 23rd Annual auction in March.

      Sterling has right stuff

Most people know that when John Sterling was police chief in Santa Maria, he was very popular with both the community and the police officers, being very active and involved in the community.

      Going electric on the road

In response to a recent letter regarding electric cars, apparently the writer has never heard of wind-or solar-generated electricity.

    CITIZEN COMMENTARY

    Declare war on eco-barons

Absolutely the most frequently voiced complaint from the American public is the high price of gasoline. These prices are because demand exceeds supply.

As the world becomes more industrialized, the problem worsens, we place blame on politicians, big oil, the Mideast, etc. The solution is to increase supply by repairing and building more refineries, along with tapping our own oil supplies from the Gulf Coast, Pacific Coast and Alaska.

Jobs will never return to the U.S. Certainly any foreign investment will be thwarted by the cost of energy. Alternative fuel sources are a nebulous concept, while causing problems such as higher food costs, deforestation, etc.

The blame falls squarely on the shoulders of our environmentalist policies and people. This group would rather see our country become part of the Third World economically, than admit they were wrong or relinquish their power.

Oil drilling can be done less invasively than it used to be. We must rid ourselves of many policies and power these eco-barons hold over us.
