CBrown: It's nice to see that not everyone, even someone with liberal leanings like Smgal4ever has, does not always have the classic knee-jerk response that guns are bad and anytime guns and kids are combined that is supposed to be obviously worse.
Maybe the hard-core radical anti-gun left is starting to realize that even 70% of Democrats believe and support the proven idea that gun ownership is an individual right- one that is not going away.
It's nice to see that not all left-bashers are devoid of rationale. Why would you assume that a left-leaner would automatically want to control gun ownership? Why would you assume a left-leaner would not be inclined to ever lean right on certain issues? This is progress. Your revelation is progress. Thanks for keeping your knee-in this time.
BTW, I am for gun-owners rights, but I think the lady who was concerned about the 8 year old thought it would be appropriate to ask the parents first, to see if they decided it was appropriate to expose their 8 y/o to what amounts to the normalization of people being shot. The lady who objected may not have been calling to infringe on other parents who want their 8y/o to have firearm lessons- which is part of our heritage, (as smgal stated). I hope the letter-writer wasn't trying to infringe on your rights, but I can also understand her perspective.
Rather than worrying so much about guns and children, why don't you start worrying about guns and homicidal Muslim fanatics (like at Fort Hood, but could be ANYWHERE, USA)?
Who will be next? What will it take to stop it? Profiling? Not on your life? That would not be "politically correct"! (sneeeeeering face).
I want to publically congratulant Smgal4ever for her common sense posting about guns, kids and education. As crazy as it might sound to some people who refuse to take responsibility for the own safety, with the Ft. Hood shooting- I would much rather be able to shoot back at the insane, mad-man killer than just stand there and have to take a bullet!
In Mississippi, every fifth grader (unless parents sign a waiver) takes a class called "hunter safety" - it is taught in all schools, public, private and parochial. The students are taught about guns, how they work and how to safely handle them. This course was first adopted in the schools in the early 1990s, because so many children hunt with their fathers, grandfathers and assorted family members. The course is taught, in most cases, by police officers. It lasts for three weeks. For the first two, there is a lot of discussion and teaching of safety. During the last week, students are taken to local shooting galleries and taught how to actually use the weapons.
You can check the national statistics for accidental gun deaths of children - Mississippi is at the bottom of that list. When you teach kids about the proper use and safety with guns, then they are less likely to think that they are "toys" or to "play" with them.
More of the same mother complex- where someone has an irrational fear that everyone else must be forced to live by. The writer is afraid of guns so everyone else MUST be afraid too.
FACT: more children die, every year, from 5 gallon buckets of water left unattended. More children die from swimming pools, car accidents, accidents in medical procedures, suffocating on swallowed objects- die from falls, poisons, etc. The public service announcements that tell everyone about all the deaths of children by guns are purposeful lies. Their definition of a child includes 16-18 year old gang members who use guns in the commission of crimes. A real-world definition of a child is someone under age 10-11 not 17 and 18 year olds!
Reality of life- guns are the great equalizer that allows the 5 foot 100 lb woman to protect herself from the 6 foot 220 lb gorilla that breaks into her house to rape her. Ban all guns and then criminals use knives and clubs and the small and mild are left to suffer.
I find it very funny that the left advocates ending the war on drugs because it is impossible to keep people from getting them or bringing them into the country- but somehow, magically, the left is able to make all guns illegal and keep them out of the hands of EVERYONE, including criminals too.
I take responsibility for my life and do not leave it to others, like the police, to protect me. (average police response time is 12 minutes- average murder is less than 3 minutes) If you are afraid of guns, then don't have one- but leave gun owners and their children alone!
Amazing: Guns are what keep us safe. Does showing a child a pill make him a drug addict. Guns don't kill people, People kill people. Guns are not to be feared. The proper use of a gun should be taught. It's called respect.

Again, Smgal4ever- good post!
