Well said, CBrown. A good alternative to the "racial drumbeat" is Star Parker's website and the good ideas represented therein:

    http://www.urbancure.org/

There, a reader will find many sensible solutions to problems and a healthy, free-market outlook. Star Parker is not afraid of being free or of taking responsibility for it. I admire her for that.

“Politicians, most of whom are presumed to be adults, tend to emphasize aspects of the health-care debate that will give each of them some kind of political advantage.”

Rarely has the SM Times printed a more truer statement. All should read these words and let them sink in. Still, these words also carry over into the academic world where those who create “studies” about poverty, hunger, food insecurity, like the politician, steer their studies towards results the fit their end goals or help advocate for a cause they feel needs to be addressed. The academic world is very competitive for awards, recognition, etc, and studies that show problems getting better do not get the attention of headlines like a study showing suffering and need.

I question the truthfulness of a report that shows half of all children on food stamps at some time in their lifetime. Yes, there is a definite need for a safety net. But equally true is that for some that are employed in supporting the safety net- need and suffering becomes a business. A business that they do not want to see go the way of the horse and buggy.

As for black children on food stamps- there is an argument that says, very correctly, that people like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton have done far more harm for blacks than they have helped. The constant drum-beat that the world is racist- the rules are against you- keep some from even trying to participate and leave them nothing but the safety net of food stamps.

The is a further argument to made, that is hard to refute, that Jessie Jackson- crying at President Obama’s acceptance speech- was not about Jackson being happy at the first black President, but was Jackson crying that he’s now been pushed down the ladder of relevance and concerned that he’ll see his paycheck decrease in size! It will take substantially more evidence before I will believe that HALF of all children need food stamps sometimes in their lives. Just like the politician- the academic has an agenda too!
