Tony Award-winning show will run through May 15 in Santa Maria, then move to Solvang

A colorful world populated by gamblers, nightclub performers and righteous do-gooders awaits audiences next month when PCPA Theaterfest presents the classic musical comedy "Guys and Dolls."

The Tony Award-winning show is scheduled to begin performances on Thursday, April 14, open April 16 and run through May 15 at the Marian Theatre on the campus of Allan Hancock College.

The show opens the summer season at Solvang/s Festival Theater on June 15, closing July 17.

A musical fable of Broadway, "Guys and Dolls," which is directed by Mark Booher, features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, and is based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon. Andrew Philpot, a Solvang resident, plays the romantic lead.

The musical follows gambler Sky Masterson who makes an improbable wager with Nathan Detroit, whose floating craps game is in dire need of cash.

The bet is that lothario Sky must woo and win any "doll" Nathan chooses. Detroit picks icy Salvation Army officer Sarah Brown. The classic score includes the pulsating "Luck Be a Lady," the silky "If I Were a Bell" and the joyous "Sit Down, You/re Rockin/ the Boat!"

Single tickets range from ,18 to ,26 for adults in Santa Maria and ,22 to ,28 in Solvang. There are discounted tickets available for seniors (,14 to ,23 in Santa Maria and ,18.75 to ,25.50 Solvang) and students (,10 to ,16.50 in Santa Maria, and ,14.50 to ,18.25 in Solvang).
