Youth Basketball — Lakeview wins VCA junior high tourney

The Lakeview Junior High School eighth grade girls basketball team won the championship of the annual Valley Christian Academy Junior High Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at VCA in Santa Maria. Lakeview defeated North County Swoosh, 27-23, to win the title.

Crossroads defeated Tommy Kunst Junior High for third place in the girls tournament.

Valley Christian defeated Fesler in the consolation championship with Orcutt Junior High topping Pacific Christian in the seventh place game.

On the boys side, Orcutt Junior High defeated the West Coast Xtreme eighth grade team for the tournament title.

Crossroads won the third place game with a victory over the West Coast Xtreme seventh grade squad.

Valley Christian defeated Pacific Christian in the consolation championship with Nipomo Explosion topping Fesler in the seventh place game.

Most of these teams will meet up again at the Home Motors Tournament Jan. 28-30 and then start the regular season Feb. 5.

Xtreme January Clinics at SJHS

The West Coast Xtreme Basketball Academy will hold a series of skills and drills basketball clinics for boys and girls in the third through eighth grades at St. Joseph High School during the month of January.

The clinics will be held Monday, Jan. 5 with the girls practicing from 6-7:30 p.m. and the boys from 7:30-9 p.m. and on and Saturday, Jan. 10 with the girls clinic running from 5-6:30 p.m. and the boys from 6:30-8 p.m.

The cost is $25 for one clinic or $40 for both.

Local high school girls and boys basketball coaches Ron Barba and Ed Torres will be the instructors for the clinic.

Semi-pro baseball — Packers Comedy Night at the Ballpark

The Santa Maria Valley Packers are hosting Packers Comedy Night at the Ballpark at the Santa Maria Country Club on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with an autograph session and no-host bar. Dinner will be served at 6:30 and will be followed by a live auction.

The evening’s featured speaker will be Tom Browning, a former pitcher with and current coach of the Cincinnati Reds. Browning threw a perfect game against the Dodgers on Sept. 16, 1988 and is also the author of “Tom Browning’s Tales from the Reds Dugout.”

Browning will be joined by several former major leaguers who are Central Coast natives including Casey Candaele, Roy Howell, Robin Ventura and Bryn Smith. Another former big leaguer, Todd Zeile, has confirmed that he’ll also join in the festivities.

The cost is $100 per person. Each ticket includes a season pass for two seats at every Santa Maria Valley Packers home game during the 2009 season and one raffle ticket.
