College Basketball — Hancock women fall at Moorpark

MOORPARK — The Bulldogs held the second-leading scorer in the Western State Conference to nearly seven points under her average Wednesday night, but had no answer for 6-2 Reyneisha Mays.

Mays poured in 26 points as she helped the Raiders defeat the Bulldogs (2-15 overall) 69-58 in a WSC opener.

The Raiders’ Tiffany Hurd had been averaging 19.7 points a game. Hancock kept her to 13. However, “Mays is 6-2, and we just couldn’t stop her,” Hancock coach Sheri Bates said.

“We don’t have a player 6-0 unless she’s standing on tippy-toes. They just had too much height inside.”

Irene Maldonado’s been averaging 14.2 points a game for the Bulldogs, and she put in 17 Wednesday night. Monica Valencia scored 12 points for Hancock, and Chelsea Cassulo added 11.

Bates said, “We led almost the entire first half,” before trailing 32-31 at halftime. “I was really happy with our players’ effort. They played very hard.”
