As a former foreign language college instructor, I read the letter of the writer bemoaning the fact that she has to stand in line at stores, and her aural senses are offended because she has to listen to the Spanish language being spoken.
What a sad, narrow-minded and provincial attitude, not understanding that, through language, you also learn about cultural differences that expand and enrich our lives.
The letter writer also expressed that she had recently visited two Midwestern states, and how happy she was that all she heard was the English language being spoken.
This person doesn't understand that life is not only meat and potatoes — foreign cuisine is an adventure.
What also came across very clearly is her disdain for a large segment of the population here in Santa Maria, namely Hispanics. My suggestion is to move to the Midwest where there is no offensive population.
