CHP will be out in force for holidays

In an effort to keep California’s roads safe, every available California Highway Patrol officer will be out on the road beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday through midnight Dec. 28.

“Consider this a warning,” said Santa Barbara Area CHP Captain Jeff Sgobba. “We will be out there taking a zero tolerance approach and will arrest you if you are drinking and driving.”

Be sure to designate a non-drinking driver, wear a seat belt, maintain a safe speed and report a suspected drunk driver to 9-1-1, Sgobba said.

Callers should be prepared to provide dispatchers a description of the vehicle, its location and direction of travel.

Last year during the same period statewide, CHP officers arrested 1,661 motorists for driving under the influence and 18 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes. A total of 43 people died in the 4,613 collisions in California during last year’s holiday enforcement period.

A similar effort will be held over the New Year’s holiday weekend which will begin at 6 p.m. Dec. 31 through midnight Jan. 4.
