Teen held on car theft, DUI charges

A Santa Maria juvenile suspected of driving a stolen truck failed to outrun officers on College Drive early this morning, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

About 2:30 a.m., the driver of a Ford truck, whose name was not released, fled from police on College Drive at Battles Road. The chase ended when the suspect crashed into a parked vehicle just past Alvin Avenue, police said.

The juvenile attempted to run away after the crash but was caught a short distance away, according to police.

The driver was treated at Marian Medical Center for a bloody nose and was booked into Santa Maria Juvenile Hall on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, evading arrest and DUI charges, police said.

Orcutt

Hikers discover human remains

Human remains have been discovered in the Orcutt Hill area, but detectives don’t believe foul play was involved, according to Drew Sugars, a spokesman for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.

The remains, discovered by hikers Friday in the area south of Stubblefield Road, appeared to have been in the area for between 3 and 10 years, Sugars said.

No identification has been made, and Sugars said detectives in the sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division were attempting to match the remains with people reported missing during that period.

“We’re waiting on the results of DNA and other forensic tests before we can release any other information,” said Sgt. Gregg Weitzman with the sheriff’s Coroner Bureau.

“Hopefully we’ll know more within the week,” Sugars said.

CHP reports holiday DUI arrests down

The California Highway Patrol was out in full force over the Thanksgiving weekend, but the number of arrests locally and on the Central Coast decreased by about one-third from last year.

The Santa Barbara Area CHP arrested 11 motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, a decrease from last year’s 16 over the same period.

For the Central Coast, 109 DUI drivers were arrested by the CHP, a decrease from last year’s 164.

“Motorists are getting the message out there and designating drivers,” said Capt. Jeff Sgobba, Commander of the Santa Barbara Area CHP office.

Grover Beach

Cause of home blaze still under inquiry

The cause had not yet been released Wednesday for a Nov. 26 fire that severely damaged one apartment and damaged an adjoining one, said Capt. Patrick Ferguson with the Grover Beach Fire Department.

No one was injured in the blaze at Manhattan Avenue and Oak Park Boulevard, which was reported around 1 p.m. However, an unknown number of pets, possibly two dogs, died in the fire, according to firefighters.

Ferguson said the report with the cause of the fire from San Luis Obispo fire investigators will probably be received by Grover Beach firefighters by early next week.

Santa Barbara

Benefit planned for two fire victims

The Santa Barbara Downtown Organization, Metropolitan Theatres Corporation and Paseo Nuevo shopping center are jointly sponsoring a movie benefit at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 to raise money for Lance and Carla Hoffman, the only people seriously injured by the Tea Fire that erupted Nov. 13 in Montecito.

“Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” will be shown at the Arlington Theatre, in honor of Carla Hoffman’s love of that movie.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.com, the Arlington Theatre Box Office, Paseo Nuevo Management Offices and Metro Entertainment.

The organizations are still looking for food, drink and monetary donations, as well as volunteers for the event. Anyone interested is urged to call the Downtown Organization at 962-2098, Ext. 10.

Donations can also be made directly to the Lance and Carla Burn Fund at any Santa Barbara Bank and Trust.
