The names of three Lompoc women involved in a fatal accident on Highway 246 east of Lompoc on Thanksgiving Day were released today by the California Highway Patrol.
Killed in the accident were Susan Gosling, 54, the driver of a Ford Escape SUV, and her passenger, Diane Lange McBurney, 69.
Angelica Arias, 21, who was driving a Nissan that went out of control and caused the accident, was in stable condition at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and was moved out of intensive-care unit on Saturday, said CHP Officer John Allen. Arias had undergone emergency surgery after suffering internal injuries and a head injury, Allen said.
Allen said charges are pending against Arias, who was westbound toward Lompoc after having attended an event at a nearby golf course. Witnesses told authorities she was speeding, following too closely and driving erratically, according to the CHP.
The Nissan ran off the right side of the road and into a field, then back across the highway and into the eastbound lane, where it collided with the eastbound Ford SUV about 1:25 p.m. near Mission Gate Road, the CHP said.
Gosling died at the scene and McBruney died later that day, according to the CHP.
