Authorities temporarily closed the section of Highway 1, for drivers heading from Lompoc to Vandenberg Village and beyond, so the CalSTAR helicopter could land on the road to pick up the patient.
Drivers were diverted to Harris Grade Road for a short time while emergency crews dealt the incident.
The accident occurred about 1 p.m. on Highway 1 near Constellation Road.
The American Medical Response ambulance reportedly was transporting a patient for a nonemergency situation when the accident occurred.
