Ambulance involved in Hwy. 1 crash near Vandenberg Village

One person was taken to the hospital by helicopter after a collision Saturday afternoon involving a nonemergency ambulance and at least one other vehicle on Highway 1 near Vandenberg Village.

Authorities temporarily closed the section of Highway 1, for drivers heading from Lompoc to Vandenberg Village and beyond, so the CalSTAR helicopter could land on the road to pick up the patient.

Drivers were diverted to Harris Grade Road for a short time while emergency crews dealt the incident.

The accident occurred about 1 p.m. on Highway 1 near Constellation Road.

The American Medical Response ambulance reportedly was transporting a patient for a nonemergency situation when the accident occurred.

One to three vehicles were involved in the accident, Capt. Eli Iskow of Santa Barbara County Fire Department said. One of the vehicles went off the road.

At least one person has serious injuries and was taken by CalSTAR air ambulance to Marian Medical Center.

Between one to three others also were injured, but the extent wasn’t immediately available, according to Iskow.
