Friday is the deadline for entries in the 2008 Santa Maria Christmas Parade of Lights Dec. 6.

Organizers urge float designers to employ lots of lights and encourage participants to don holiday apparel, with entries focusing on original design and spectator appeal.

In keeping with the theme of “The Joy of Giving,” participants and spectators are urged to bring canned or other nonperishable food items that will be donated to the Salvation Army.

The parade will begin at 5:20 p.m. at Stowell Road and travel north on Broadway, ending at the Santa Maria Town Center. The 5:20 p.m. start time is designed to align with darkness so the well-lit floats have perfect backdrop for display.

In case of rain, the parade will be held Dec. 13.

Cash prizes totaling $2,700 will be given out, including a $600 grand prize and first- and second-place prizes in seven categories. Those first- and second-place winners will receive $200 and $100, respectively.

The Parade of Lights is organized by the four Rotary Clubs of Santa Maria and Nipomo. Joining the four clubs as sponsors are the Santa Maria Times newspaper and KCOY/KKFX television stations.
