WALNUT - Jordan Hasay didn't set a course record at Mt. San Antonio College Saturday. She did, though, get the sub-16:30 she had said she wanted.
In just her second race this season, the six-time All-American won the Girls Sweepstakes Race in 16:27 over the hilly three-mile course at the nationally-renowned Mt. SAC Invitational Saturday. The Arroyo Grande resident and Mission Prep senior ran the second-fastest time ever on the course and the fastest time of the day.
The course record is 16:16.
“I'm very happy,” Hasay, who is a three-time All-American in cross country and three-time All-American in track and field, said in a phone interview afterward. “It was a good race.”
Alex Dunne from San Clemente finished second in 16:48 - Hasay's winning time as a freshman. Molly Grabill of Rancho Bernardo finished third in 16:54.
“Alex Dunne did a really good job,” said Hasay. “People said she was five seconds behind me at the halfway point.”
Hasay chuckled, “That was a little close, so then I guess I pulled away a little bit.”
Hasay went out quickly. “I went out kind of by myself - 5:09 the first mile,” she said. Hasay went on to finish her high school career 4-0 in her Mt. SAC Invitational races.
Meanwhile, she has been honored yet again.
This time, she is USA Track and Field Magazine's Female Athlete of the Year. Her biggest accomplishment this year was the 4:14.50 she ran at the semi-finals of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials for the national girls 1,500 meters high school record.
Hasay had 190 points in the balloting for the Track and Field News award. Chanelle Price, an 800-meter star, was runner-up with 139. Graduated Riverbank senior German Fernandez, who broke state meet 1,600 and 3,200 records in a spectacular double, is the magazine's Male Athlete of the Year.
“The guy (from the magazine) actually interviewed me about it last summer,” said Hasay.
“I really thought Chanelle was going to get it. I had a really good track season, so I guess that helped set it up.
She has a chance to become the first female athlete since Angela Williams, in 1997 and ‘98, to win the award twice.
Nipomo junior Andrew Garcia ran another impressive race Friday in what has been a strong season for him. He finished second in 16:21 in the Titans' Division III boys race.
