The Santa Maria-Bonita School District fall disaster drill will be held on at 9 a.m. Oct. 29. Students and staff at every school and district building will practice the duck, cover, evacuate and search/rescue procedures.
The district will also test its emergency radio communication process at that time. Schools typically hold their own fire, earthquake, safe mode or bus evacuation drills once a month.
The district holds a simultaneous district-wide disaster drill twice a year.
All parents are invited to attend “Homework Without Headaches,” a parent education night presented by Dunlap School Principal Joe Dana and Kathleen Stevenson, a Dunlap parent and president of the Santa Maria Valley Council of Parent-Teacher Associations.
The event takes place Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Joe Nightingale School at 255 Winter Road in Santa Maria.
Attendees will receive specific advice and tips on how to solve a range of homework problems that students and parents encounter.
Free childcare will be available for kids ages 2 to 12.
Dunlap School's annual Fall Festival will take place from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and carnival games and activities will be held from 5:30 to
8:30 p.m.

The Orcutt Union School District Band Program will hold its third annual Fall Barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Orcutt Lions Den in Old Orcutt.
The cost of a meal is $7, which includes a half chicken, beans, salad and bread. Also, the Orcutt Marching Band will play outside the Lions Den from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Oct. 31 is the deadline for the Dunlap School Parent-Teacher Association to collect and submit Box Tops for Education.
If you have boxtops to turn in, bring them to the office at 1220 Oak Knoll Road.
If you or your parents earn a livelihood through agricultural labor, you may be exempted from paying nonresident tuition at Allan Hancock College and other California community colleges.
According to California Education Code, if you or your parents work in seasonal employment involving actual production of agricultural crops - in California or any other state - for at least two months per year and have done so for each of the last two years, you may be exempt from having to pay out-of-state fees.
To confirm this exemption, you must go to the Admissions Office and provide a copy of your Migrant Education Program Employment Verification form or bring pay stubs showing two months of employment in an agricultural setting for each of the past two years.

The Allan Hancock College Singers, directed by Ann Lucas, will perform Antonio Vivaldi's “Gloria” in conjunction with the San Luis Chamber Orchestra at 3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Grace Bible Church in Arroyo Grande.
This performance marks the choir's first collaboration with the San Luis orchestral ensemble, which has just named professional clarinetist and adjunct Cal Poly Professor Keith Waibel as its music director.

Hancock College is cosponsoring the Young Educated Latino Leaders (YELL) Conference today. This conference is open to any young Latino or Latina enrolled in grades 9 through 12 or community college.
Several professional guest speakers and role models from the Central Coast will encourage students to set higher education by providing college and career workshops and sharing personal and career stories.
The conference is free and lunch will be provided.
