CHP: Alcohol

had role in collision

A Santa Maria man escaped injury Thursday in a three-vehicle, alcohol-related injury crash on Calle Real, east of Dexter Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three men suffered injuries in the collision around 1:30 p.m.

Anthony Babcock, 50, of Santa Maria was driving his 1979 Peterbilt three-axle dump truck westbound on Calle Real, and was followed by Cody Eicorn, 23, of Santa Barbara, who was driving his 2005 Nissan Frontier.

Robert Catalfamo, 38, of Santa Barbara was driving his 1993 Ford Ranger pickup truck eastbound on Calle Real, drinking an alcoholic beverage, according to the CHP.

While disposing of the empty container out a window, Catalfamo lost control of his truck and it crossed the double yellow lines of Calle Real, according to the CHP. The Ranger struck the dump truck head-on with the left front of both vehicles hitting, CHP officials said.

Catalfamo was admitted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with a fractured arm, while Eicorn and Catalfamo's passenger, 27-year-old Ryan Kelly of Lompoc, were treated at and released from the same hospital.

Alcohol played a role in the collision, and the extent that alcohol was involved remains under investigation, said CHP officials.

Local sheriff's dogs in Fossett search

Two cadaver dogs with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department are in Madera County helping search for the remains of missing aviation pioneer Steve Fossett, local officials said.

The dogs - Jaydan and Gusto - along with four Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue team members, were dispatched from San Luis Obispo Wednesday night to a remote crash site near Mammoth Lakes, according to sheriff's officials.

The plan was to have the K-9 teams search the crash site and surrounding areas in an attempt to recover Fossett's body, officials said.

A hiker found personal items belonging to Fossett on Monday near Mammoth Lakes, and an aerial search of the area Wednesday turned up the wreckage.

Fossett, 63, has been missing since Sept. 3, 2007, when he failed to return from a flight he took over the Nevada desert. He was declared legally dead earlier this year.
