A Santa Maria rescue mission for men got the go-ahead Tuesday to add beds to its residential facility.
With an approved conditional-use permit from the Santa Maria Planning Commission, the nonprofit Central Coast Rescue Mission will be able to accommodate up to 12 men on
12 beds at 1207 N. McClelland St.
The mission provides housing and rehab services for men who are under criminal-justice system authority. Most are court ordered into the supervised “clean and sober living” one-year program. At the moment, there are two bedrooms with a total of eight beds.
The Rev. Mark Parke, the applicant, plans to convert a room used as office space into a third bedroom with four beds. It is his goal to have four beds - two bunk beds - in each of the three rooms, for a total of 12 residents.
In other action, the panel approved a conditional-use permit to allow a commercial batting-cage facility called The Pitch Out at 2305 A Street.
Both votes were 4-0, Commissioner Adrian Andrade was absent.
