Bryant scores four as AHC edges Citrus

GLENDORA - The Hancock College football team's final tune-up before the games that count the most was a success.

Diondrea Bryant ran for 216 yards and four touchdowns as he helped the Bulldogs beat Citrus 48-38 at Citrus College Saturday night. Hancock is 3-1. The Owls are 1-3.

College of the Canyons looms ahead for the Bulldogs in their National Conference Northern Division opener. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. next Saturday at Righetti High School's Warrior Stadium.

Canyons was ranked second in the latest Southern California poll. The Cougars began the season as the top-ranked junior college football team in the nation by at least one publication.

Hancock and College of the Canyons are part of the Southern California Football Association's National Conference. Citrus plays in the conference's Central Division.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 28-3 on the Owls on Bryant's second touchdown, a 2-yard run and Eric Anderwkavich's two-point conversion pass to Marguelo Suel.

Hancock led 28-10 at halftime. Tyra Waits collected a 6-yard touchdown pass from Austi Goldsmith, and Kyle Eden kicked the extra point seven seconds before halftime.

Bryant scored the winning touchdown on a 47-yard run with 10:16 to play. That made it 42-24. Citrus tacked on two late touchdowns, the last with one second left.

Eden started the scoring with a 21-yard field goal with 9:26 left in the first quarter. Bryant put the Bulldogs ahead for good with an 11-yard run.

Hancock gained an unusually high number of yards, 517, and gave up an unusually high number, 453.

All but 30 of those Citrus yards came from passing. Defensive back Lamar Allen was again Hancock's leading tackler, with five tackles and six assists. Michael Irving, Mike Garcia and Lompoc graduate Tim Ochoa all intercepted passes for Hancock.

Anderwkavich threw two touchdown passes and no interceptions. His 11-yard toss to Marguelo Suel put the Bulldogs up 20-3 with 13:37 left in the second quarter. Casy Belluz kicked the extra point.

Telvin McMillan rushed for 99 yards, 59 of those coming on one touchdown run, as Hancock ran for a season-best 405 yards.
