Police seek driver in hit-and-run accident
The Pismo Beach Police Department called in reinforcements Wednesday to saturate the city in the hope of apprehending a driver suspected of injuring a bicyclist during a hit-and-run accident that occurred this afternoon.
The condition of the unidentified bicyclist and the nature of his injuries were not reported, but police said he was transported to Arroyo Grande Hospital.
At 1:46 p.m., police received a report of a vehicle vs. bicyclist traffic collision in the 2600 block of Price Street.
The suspect vehicle was described as a dark green 1991-1994 Ford Explorer or Ford Ranger with an extra cab shell. Witnesses said the vehicle was missing its rear license plate and had numerous items inside of it, police said.
They also described the driver as having long hair, police said.

Police arrest burglary suspect
A 35-year-old Shell Beach man was arrested shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday fleeing the scene of an alleged residential burglary, according to the Pismo Beach Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Solano Avenue for a report of a burglary in progress and located the suspect, Richard Loots, about a block away, police said.
Loots allegedly broke into the home around 3:55 a.m. and woke up a resident when he turned on a bedroom light. The unidentified resident chased Loots out of the home, police said.
The resident positively identified Loots as the person who broke into the home. No property was recovered, and Loots didn’t offer any reason for being in the residence, police said.
Loots was taken to County Jail, where he was booked on burglary charges and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

County awards boat dock contract
The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors approved a $253,240 contract with Hanly General Engineering Corp. Tuesday to construct new boat launch docks at Lopez Lake.
The project consists of replacing the marina’s existing floating boat launching docks, and installing new dock anchors, according to Janette Pell, county General Services director.
Hanly Engineering, which is based in Santa Ynez, was the low bidder on the project.

No contest plea in child sex-abuse case
A Santa Maria man is serving a 12-year prison sentence for continuously sexually abusing a child after he pleaded no contest to the charge.
Humberto Hernandez Pena entered the plea in Santa Barbara County Superior Court in Santa Maria last month, and was sentenced to 12 years in state prison, said Deputy District Attorney Stephen Foley.
Pena will have to register as a sex offender.
He was arrested in January, and police said at the time that the abuse happened at places throughout the city during the past 10 years.

More than a ton of trash picked up
More than 500 volunteers picked up more than a ton of trash and 582 pounds of recyclables in Santa Barbara County during Saturday’s 24th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day.
The county Public Works Department announced Wednesday that 509 volunteers cleaned 17 beaches in a three-hour period, picking up 2,070 pounds of trash and 582 pounds of recyclables.
In San Luis Obispo County, more than 1,200 volunteers picked up 2,970 pounds of trash and 1,641 pounds of recyclables from numerous sites in the cleanup, according to the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo County.
California Coastal Cleanup Day is sponsored by the California Coastal Commission, and is part of an international event that takes place the third Saturday of every September.

Power restored after local outage
The power had returned by early Wednesday afternoon to all 21 Santa Maria customers who had outages Wednesday morning, according to Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
Two separate outages were responsible for the loss of power: 16 customers lost their electricity at 9:40 a.m., and the power went out for five customers between 7:20 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., said PG&E spokeswoman Jana Morris.
The power returned to the 16 customers along Fairway Avenue shortly before 11 a.m., and the five customers in East Santa Maria south of Prell Road had their electricity back by 1:30 p.m.

Parade to close off part of Broadway
Broadway will be closed between Stowell Road and Cook Street from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday for the annual Cruzin’ for Life cancer survivors' parade.
Proceeds of the Marian Cancer Center event, which includes a car show at the Radisson Hotel, fundraiser dinner and a burnout competition, will benefit the American Cancer Society.
The Santa Maria Police Department and the California Highway Patrol will provide traffic control for the downtown parade of cancer survivors and their families in classic cars.

Highway 246 repaving next week
Repaving of two sections of Highway 246 will take place daytime hours next week from Hill Haven Road, near Alamo Pintado Road, to Via Juana Road, and from Edison Street to the intersection of Highway 246 and Highway 154.
The work will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays with one-way reversing traffic control through the project area.
Motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes, a Caltrans spokesman said. The project is expected to be completed by mid-October.
