Sunday festivals promise music, food, parade

Events Sunday in Guadalupe and Santa Maria will mark Mexico’s version of July 4.

To celebrate the upcoming Mexican Independence Day, which will be Monday, and other celebrations in Latin American countries during September, the Latino Business and Community Council and the city of Santa Maria will present Las Fiestas Patrias from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Cook and McClelland streets.

The free event is scheduled to include music from Los Grandes de Tijuana, Veneno Norteno, performances from folklorico dancers, and authentic food from various vendors serving tacos, burritos, tamales and other traditional favorites.

There will be two music stages, one at each end of the street, with food vendors on the top level of the city parking lot, street-level booths for nonprofit groups, and vendors and dancing in the new library plaza.

The event is a fundraiser for Latino Business and Community Council student scholarships.

In Guadalupe, Highway 1 will be closed from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday between 5th and 10th streets for the annual Fiestas Patrias Parade.

Translated as “Patriotic Holidays,” Fiestas Patrias recognizes Mexico's independence from Spain, which occurred at midnight between Sept. 15 and 16, 1810.
