Residents in six South County areas can help clean up their communities by disposing of extra trash for free during the Fall Cleanup Week set for Sept. 22 through 26.
The free extra trash pickup is available to South County Sanitary Service customers in Arroyo Grande, Avila Beach, Grover Beach, Nipomo, Oceano and Pismo Beach.
On their regular garbage collection days, residents can set out up to 12 standard trash cans, bags or bundles of trash — in addition to their regular trash bins — and South County Sanitary trucks will pick them up at no extra charge.
The extra trash must be on the curb by 6 a.m. on regular collection days. Cans, bags and bundles are limited to a maximum of 75 pounds each, and bundles are limited to a maximum of 4 feet in length.
Regular trash cans will be emptied and left on the curb, but bags and boxes will be hauled away unless they’re tagged with notes to have them left.
Even bulky items like televisions, chairs, water heaters, washers, dryers, small appliances, box springs, mattresses, couches, passenger car tires, refrigerators, computer monitors and other metal items will be hauled off for a $10 charge.
Larger items, requiring two men to handle, will be hauled at costs to be determined through an advance quote by South County Sanitary.
Pickup of all bulky items must be arranged a minimum of seven days before scheduled collection days by calling South County Sanitary Service at 489-4246.
Hazardous waste is not allowed in trash during the free cleanup week or in regular trash pickups.
But South County residents can dispose of such materials as paint, solvents, batteries and other hazardous household waste at no charge from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday at the collection site at South Frontage Road and Southland Street in Nipomo.
