San Marcos Pass

Roadwork to begin Monday on Hwy. 154

Work on a new turnout lane on eastbound Highway 154 south of Painted Cave Road is scheduled to begin Monday as construction continues on new turn lanes at Paradise Road and at Vista Point west of Cold Spring Canyon Bridge.

Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes during reversing traffic control from Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at each location. On Thursday, there will be reversing traffic control from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to install new drainage culverts across the highway at Vista Point and Paradise Road.

Flag men will direct traffic through the work areas, and the California Highway Patrol will monitor traffic. Drivers who aren’t traveling to a destination on Highway 154 are encouraged to use Highway 101 instead.

Construction runs through summer 2009 but will not occur on weekends or holidays.

Crews rescue hikers in separate incidents

Rescuers aided two men Saturday after one broke his leg while hunting and the other had heat exhaustion.

In the first incident, a man, whose name wasn’t released, was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with a severely fractured left leg after he slipped while hunting north of Upper Oso Campground.

The injured hiker call came in shortly before 12:30 p.m., said Capt. Curt Warner with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The 35-year-old man was taken by helicopter to the Los Prietos Ranger Station, and was transported by ground ambulance to the hospital.

In the other incident later Saturday afternoon, a Santa Barbara County search-and-rescue crew responded to help a man suffering from heat exhaustion on a ridge north of Zaca Lake.

The 29-year-old man was reportedly out of water and weak, Warner said.

With the aid of a county helicopter and the U.S. Forest Service, the man was hoisted in the aircraft and taken to safety. He most likely returned to his own vehicle and took care of himself, Warner said.

Fire crews respond to small fire

A small fire was found Friday night in an underground electrical vault in the 300 block of Calle Lippizana, said Capt. Eli Iskow with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Several homes in the area also reportedly had power problems.

One house had smoke, but firefighters didn’t find a fire inside, Iskow said.

The home had several damaged appliances and had experienced an electrical problem earlier.

Southern California Edison crews were called to the scene.

If the ordinance moves forward for a second reading, its adoption would be at the Sept. 23 meeting.
