CSA boys under-17 wins SC Bayern Cup

CARSON - The Cherif Soccer Academy Boy's Under-17 team captured the championship of the South Coast Bayern Cup, held over the July 4th weekend.

The final was held at the Home Depot Center, with MLS players and staff from the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA in attendance. The team is a member of the new Coastal Valley Soccer Club (CVSC), formerly SMISO.

Playing in the Under-19 Gold Division, CSA advanced to the final after a convincing 6-3 semifinal win over the Lamont Tornados at Long Beach State University. In the final against the Modesto Palmeiras, Servando Perez scored for CSA in the first minute. Antonio Rodriguez, Angel Cortes and Andy Contreras also scored as CSA powered their way to a convincing 5-1 victory. Contreras, of Santa Maria High School, was named tournament MVP.

“This was our first tournament since our former coach and trainer Cherif Maghni moved to Europe.” said team manager Bob Frias. “Since then the team has been trained by Anthony Grillo, a player for the Cal Poly Mustangs. He has done an outstanding job with the team. It was a great weekend.”

The team was awarded medals, T-shirts and a crystal trophy, along with a private tour of the Home Depot Center and future recognition at a Galaxy game.

Team members included Gilbran Alvarez, Nestor Alvarez, Isaac Brivesca, Andy Contreras, Angel Cortes, Taylor Frias, Mikey Hernandez, Rodrigo Hernandez, Ehi Robinson, Eddie Perez, Servando Perez, Francis Quispe, Antonio Rodriguez, Aaron Thule, Horacio Vieyra and Elvis Zaragoza.

Chivas USA U-19 visits Central Coast

After the success of last summer's big soccer exhibition match between Chivas U19 and the Santa Maria All-stars, the Boys Scouts of America, Los Padres Council will expand the event this year.

Chivas will take on the All-stars on Sunday, July 27 at Pioneer Valley High School in Santa Maria in a unique doubleheader.

The Chivas U19 team will take on the Santa Maria All-stars at 12:30 p.m. and that match will be followed by a game between the Ex-Chivas de Guadalajara and the Central Coast All-stars.

Al Garcia, who will once again coach the Santa Maria All-stars said that the Guadalajara squad is the original Chivas team that is known worldwide. Ex-Chivas will feature legendary stars Martin “Pulpo” Zuniga, Manolo “El Matador” Martinez, Lupillo Casteneda and many more.

Tickets for the doubleheader are available at Allstate Insurance, 110 S. Lincoln, Suite 104, Carniceria El Matador, Garibaldi's Restaurant and the Boy Scouts of America. The cost in advance is $20 for adults and $15 for youths. At the gate the price will increase to $25 -$20.

Also Chivas USA U19 and the Ex-Chivas players will host a clinic for boys ages 6 through 12. The clinic will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the exhibition.

Soccer clinic fees include Soccer and Scouting Membership, clinic certificate of participation, one youth ticket to the game and an autograph session with the players.

The cost is $40 for BSA members and $50 for new BSA members.

Joe White Dinner Coming Up

The 7th Annual Joe White Memorial Dinner and Auction is coming up on Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Santa Maria Fairpark Plaza Pavilion.

Presented by the Hancock College Booster Club and led by the Joe White Memorial Fund Committee, the dinner and auction raises much needed money for the Hancock athletic programs and athletic facilities.

The evening includes a no-host cocktail hour, New York strip dinner, a silent and a live auction.

The committee is currently looking for table sponsors, cash contributions or auction items. Individual tickets are also on sale. For more information call 345-5858. Reservations are required.

Orcutt YFL Cheer registration

The Orcutt Youth Football League is holding cheerleader registration for the 2008 season. Girls ages 5-14 are eligible to participate.

The cost is $185 and includes your uniform.

The season gets underway on August 4 and runs through mid-October.

Colvin, Zakaria win CVJGA golf tourneys

Parker Colvin and Joseph Zakaria won the most recent Coast Valley Junior Golf Association (CVJGA) tournaments.

Colvin won the title at the Home Motors Championship at Monarch Dunes in Nipomo while Zakaria won the title at the Valley Awards Tournament at the Santa Maria Country Club.

Colvin shot a 73 to win the overall championship at the Home Motors Tournament.

Tyler Shean fired a 77 to win the Boys 15-17 Division. He was followed by Zakaria (78) and Chris Blystone (79).

Landon Brown won the Boys 12-14 Division after shooting an 86. He was followed by Derrick Neiman (88) and Adam Zakaria (88).

Danielle Gillaspy's 82 was good for a one-stroke victory over Amber Lee (83) in the Girls 18-hole Division. Kelsey Nolan (99) finished in third place.

Desiree Gillaspy shot a 43 to win the Girls 9-hole Division ahead of Delaney Nolan (72) and Rachel Nolan (74).

Cory Hailger shot a 41 to win the Boys 11-and-under (9 hole) Division. He was followed by Devin Hale (44) and Brandan Pita (46).

Joseph Zakaria shot a 76 to win the overall championship at the Valley Awards Tournament.

Chas Whitmore, Shane Sideris and Tyler Shean all shot 78s for a three-way tie for first place in the Boys 15-7 Division.

Whitemore won that title in a card-off, followed by Sideris and Shean.

Landon Brown and Adam Zakaria tied for the top spot with 84s in the Boys 12-14 Division.

Brown won the title in a card-off. Derrick Neiman (87) finished third.

Danielle Gillaspy (88) posted another one-stroke victory over Amber Lee (89) in the Girls 18-hole Division. Kelsey Wong (109) took third.

Desiree Gillaspy shot a 50 to win the Girls 9-hole Division ahead of Rachel Nolan (67) and Delaney Nolan (74).

Brandan Pita won the Boys 11-and-under (9 hole) Division with a 45. Devin Hale (50) finished second and Cory Haigler (51) finished in third place.
