Heat sizzles at Dare to Dream tennis tournament

The Santa Ynez Valley Heat boys under-15 baseball team won the Dare to Dream Tournament in Paso Robles over the Labor Day weekend.

The Heat went undefeated over the weekend - finishing at 5-0 - wrapping up the title with a 15-3 victory over the All Americans.

The Heat have won seven straight tournaments, putting up a40-1 record this summer.

The Heat next heads to Las Vegas for the Triple Crown Fall National Championships.

Matzenauer packs in hardware at SM Comcast Open

Suzanne Matzenauer was part of a top seeding three times at the Santa Maria Comcast Open last weekend. She won twice.

The Tacoma, Wash. resident teamed with Brittany Blalock to win the Women's Open Doubles title and with Brett Joelson to take the Mixed Open Doubles championship. Both pairs were top-ranked.

Matzenauer and Blalock defeated Jordan Dockendorf and Lauren Stratman 6-2, 6-0 in the Women's Open Doubles championship match. Matzenauer and Joelson downed Blalock and Andy Gerst 6-3, 6-2 to win the Mixed Open Doubles title.

Matzenauer, the top seed in the Women's Open Singles tournament, lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to third-ranked Page Bartelt in the final.

Third-ranked Adriano Biasello edged Righetti graduate Stefan Hardy 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4) to win the Men's Open Singles championship. Top-ranked Dana Evangelista and Tom McGurty beat Jeffrey Pawley and David Valencia 6-4, 6-2 for the Men's 5.0 Doubles championship.

In other championship matches, second-ranked Biasello and Zachary Fleishman downed top-seeded Jeffrey Pawley and David Valencia 6-4, 6-2 in Men's Open Doubles; and third-seeded Robert Hansen rallied past Daniel Lara of Lompoc 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in Men's 5.0 singles.

Hancock Cup and Million Dollar Shootout

The 7th annual Hancock Cup and Bulldog Million Dollar Shootout will be held on Monday, Sept. 15 at the Santa Maria Country Club.

Presented by the Alan Hancock Foundation, The Hancock Cup if a four person scramble golf tournament with champions crowned in both the low gross (no handicap) and low net (with handicaps figured in) divisions.

The Bulldog Million Dollar Shootout gives as many as 20 contestants the chance to win $1,000,000 for sinking a hole-in-one from 135 yards out on the 18th hole. The shootout begins immediately after the Hancock Cup tournament finishes up.

The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. with lunch served at noon on the course.

The entry fee is $150 per player. Sponsorships are also available.

Friday Football Scoreboard goes back on line

The high school football season gets underway on Friday night.

There are four Week Zero games on the schedule - Righetti at Pioneer Valley, Nipomo at Lompoc, Carpinteria at Santa Ynez, and Bishop Diego at Arroyo Grande.

Once again, you won't have to wait until Friday night's 11 o'clock TV news to find out how your favorite high school football team fared.

The Friday Football Scoreboard will be up and running on the Santa Maria Times Web site - www.santamariatimes.com.

After logging on to the site, go to the “Local Sports” section and just click on “Friday Football Scoreboard” to get the latest scores from all the Central Coast high school games.

Scores are updated at the end of each quarter with final scores posted by 10:45 p.m.

It's all back on line starting Friday night.
