A $1.4 million state grant awarded to the College School District last week will go toward sprucing up the Santa Ynez School campus, officials said.
College School District has been awarded $1,440,779 in school modernization funds, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell announced recently.
Jim Brown, district superintendent, said that the Santa Ynez School Modernization Grant that was passed as local bond Measure Z in 2004 helped to provide matching funds for the grant.
The money from the state and the bond totals more than $2 million; the state was responsible for 60 percent and the district had to provide the remaining 40 percent, Brown explained.
“This will go to improvements at the Santa Ynez School site that have been happening over the last three years including the new roof, new paint, remodeling of the classrooms, new playground, new parking areas, the tennis courts were refurbished, and technology inside the classrooms as well. This has been an extensive process,” Brown said.
Brown said that the district has applied for several other state facilities grants and should know soon whether those will be funded as well.
Officials announced Thursday that the State Allocation Board (SAB) has awarded more than $259 million to 69 school districts and county office of education for the construction and modernization of schools.
The SAB is responsible for determining the allocation of state resources, such as proceeds from General Obligation Bond issues and other designated state funds used for the new construction and modernization of local public school facilities.
The SAB meets monthly to apportion funds to school districts, act on appeals, and adopt policies and regulations as they pertain to the programs administered by the SAB.
