Cabrillo's Duffy wins KC Royals award

The Kansas City Royals announced their minor league pitchers and players of the year from their minor league affiliates and Cabrillo High School grad Danny Duffy was named pitcher of the year for the Single-A Burlington Bees.

The 19-year old left-handed pitcher had an outstanding year in Burlington after staying in Arizona for extended spring training.

Duffy was 8-4 with a 2.20 ERA in 17 starts for the Bees, who won the second half of the Midwest League, Western Division. He had 102 strikeouts in 81.2 innings with only 25 walks.

In his last 11 starts Duffy has gone 6-1 with a .99 ERA. Duffy pitched the first six innings of a combined no-hitter on Aug. 7 against Peoria.

Burlington won the second half with a 43-26 record, three-and-a-half games ahead of second place Cedar Rapids. They were 73-65 overall. The playoffs will begin this evening as the Bees host the Kane County Cougars.

All 16 players picked from the eight minor league squads in the Royals organization will be introduced at Future's Night on Friday, Sept. 19 at Kaufman Stadium during an on-field presentation before the Royals-White Sox game.
