Local family seeks help from the community

A local family is asking for community support for their son, who is battling cancer.

Jaryd Padgett, 16, son of Jeff and Denise Padgett of Arroyo Grande, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma this summer.

Jaryd, a junior at Arroyo Grande High School, is undergoing cancer treatment at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University.

An account has been set up by Rabobank under “Jaryd Padgett Benefit.” Anyone interested in making a donation can do so at any Rabobank location, said Denise Padgett, a longtime Arroyo Grande resident.

“My sister-in-law set it up,” she said. “She was trying to figure out how to give people a place to help out.”

The event, which will most likely include a barbecue, 50-50 drawing, and live and silent auctions, will be held in September or October, Padgett added.

Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer, makes it more difficult for a patient's immune system to fight off illnesses, according to the Mayo Clinic Web site.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that 8,220 Americans will be diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma this year.

To donate or for more information, call Debbie Hatley at 701-7470.
