Santa Barbara County

Department seeks academy members

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department is accepting applications for its North County Sheriff's Citizen's Academy.

The citizen's academy was developed to better educate the public in the duties and training of county sheriff's deputies.

Adults 18 years of age and older are invited to participate in the six-week program, which is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 10.

The first class will take place at the Solvang Veterans Hall, at 1745 Mission Drive, with subsequent classes to be held at different locations in the county each Wednesday night.

Participants will meet Sheriff Bill Brown, tour the County Jail and dispatch center, interact with deputies, shoot real and simulated firearms, and test their skills in driving.

All department volunteers are required to attend a citizen's academy.

Applications for the citizen's academy are available at all of the sheriff's sub-stations in the North County. The applications should be filled out and returned to a sheriff's sub-station by Tuesday, and marked “attn: Sr. Deputy Uhrig-Solvang.”




Goleta

Panel to assist with city's plan update

A newly formed committee was tasked with assisting in the update of the 1993 Goleta Community Plan by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

The Goleta Valley Planning Advisory Committee (GVPAC) members include Edwin (Ted) Adams, Thomas Elliott, Kenan Ezal, Bonnie Freeman, Kenneth Mineau, Valerie Olson and Kimberly True.

The first public GVPAC meeting will be held 6 p.m. Oct. 1, in the Planning Commission Hearing Room at 105 E. Anapamu St. in Santa Barbara.

Cancer Society bus to stop in SM today

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network's “Fight Back Express” bus is set to stop in Santa Maria today on its six-month tour to fight cancer and improve access to health care.

The event is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. at Wal-Mart, 2220 South Bradley Road. Mayor Larry Lavagnino will be speak on access to care, and breast cancer survivor and world-record holding power-lifting champion, Mary Rubcic-Tawzer will also speak.

The sister advocacy organization of the American Cancer Society, ACS CAN, is sponsoring the tour to promote the role elected officials play in supporting laws and policies to help people fight cancer.

The tour began in early May in Ohio, and will continue through the continental United States through Election Day, Nov. 4.

Man, son killed in Hwy. 46 accident

A father and his toddler son are dead following a fatal accident that occurred on Highway 46 over Labor Day weekend.

Ronnie Clemmons, 33, and Caleb Clemmons, 3, both of Cambria, died when the 2008 Nissan Titan truck they were passengers in traveled off the road and rolled over, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Nissan, Nichole D. Clemmons, 20, of Cambria, and a 10-year-old passenger, Lauren Clemmons, also of Cambria, suffered minor injuries.

At approximately 11:25 a.m. Monday, Nichole Clemmons lost control of the truck while traveling east on Highway 46, west of Bethel Road, at approximately 45 mph, according to CHP reports.

The Nissan went off the south side of the road and rolled, ejecting Ronnie Clemmons and Caleb, the CHP said.

Caleb, who was reportedly in a child safety seat, died at the scene, reports state.

His father was rushed to Twin Cities Community Hospital, where he died from his injuries shortly after 3 p.m.

First art exhibit opens at new library

The new Santa Maria Public Library's first art exhibit is open to the public and free through Sept. 30

The exhibit in Shepard Hall, just off the lobby, opened Aug. 23.

Organized by John Hood, a fine arts faculty member at Allan Hancock College and the Santa Barbara County 5th District Arts Commissioner, the exhibit showcases local artists.

Youngsters invited to fishing event

Boys and girls ages 6 to 12 are invited to participate in the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department's second annual “Take Me Fishing” event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Jim May Park, 809 Stanford Drive.

The Santa Maria Valley Sportsmen's Association and Central Coast Salmon Enhancement co-hosted event is free and no fishing experience is necessary. A limited number of loaner fishing poles will be available.

Participants will learn the basics of fishing, take part in a casting contest, fish printing activities, GPS treasure hunt, learn about lake life and boating safety.

Rental firm seeks to boost its displays

Cars for rent could soon be sharing space with all terrain vehicles, jet skis and scooters - also for rent - at Zynk Recreational Rentals in Santa Maria.

A conditional-use permit allowing the indoor display of cars for rent and car rentals at 2010 N. Preisker Lane is the public hearing on tonight's Santa Maria Planning Commission agenda.

The applicant, Adriana Perez-Orozco, is proposing the interior display of three automobiles and the outdoor display of two automobiles maximum in the parking lot.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers, 110 E. Cook St.
