Thousands of people showed up Sunday for the 29th annual Family Day in the Park in Santa Maria. The annual summer event in Waller Park, organized by Santa Maria Valley YMCA, Friends of Waller Park and the Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary, included activities and entertainment such as the Huck Finn Fishin' Derby, barbershop singers, dancers, food, carnival games, bounce houses and a climbing wall.

Family Day is designed to bring families and the community together for a day of free entertainment, with a focus on both fun and education.

This year's event included “Greening the Future,” a joint venture involving Pacific Gas & Electric Co., YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Maria Valley, was aimed at teaching the community about energy efficiency. The utility firm also sponsored a tree-planting activity to help young people learn how to conserve the planet's resources.
