Vandenberg AFB
Dropping of atomic bombs remembered
Two dozen protesters gathered at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Saturday afternoon to mark the anniversaries of the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945.
Armed with signs including one saying “No Hiroshima ever again,” the protesters — reportedly from Los Angeles Catholic Worker — remained outside the main gate for two hours before disbanding.
Lt. Raymond Geoffroy, a Vandenberg spokesman, said base security forces arrested two men who had previously been issued notices banning them from Vandenberg property.
The letters are typically issued when protesters are arrested for trespassing violations during demonstrations, and order them to remain off base property for up to three years.
For Saturday’s demonstration, the base erected orange snow fencing and shrouded the signs in front of the base with black cloth.
