The Santa Maria-Bonita School District has tapped one of its existing administrators to serve as its new superintendent.
The board of education announced today that Phil Alvarado, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, will take the district’s top job when Superintendent David Francis retires in January.
Prior to becoming an administrator at the district office level, Alvarado was the first principal of Ontiveros School, where he served for four years.
He was also the principal at Fairlawn School for four years, and was assistant principal at Adam, Miller and Fesler junior high schools.
Alvarado has taught second, third, fifth and sixth grades at four Santa Maria-Bonita campuses. He began working for the district as a bilingual teacher’s aide shortly after his high school graduation in 1973.
Alvarado lives in Santa Maria with his wife Cindy, who works at Community Bank of Santa Maria.
