Rattlers pull out win over Indians

The San Luis Obispo Rattlers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Santa Maria Indians Wednesday night in San Luis Obispo. No other details were made available.

The Indians will host the Santa Barbara Foresters at 6 p.m. tonight at Elks Field.

Hancock to Name Two New Coaches

Pending approval by the Allan Hancock College board of trustees at their next meeting on Aug.19, the school will have two new head coaches.

Rod Garcia has been recommended to become the new women's soccer coach, replacing Cherif Maghni who resigned to pursue more education in Europe.

Garcia brings many years of championship experience to the field. At Stanford University, Garcia was named All-American honorable mention in soccer and was selected to play in the North American Soccer League by the San Jose Earthquakes.

Following a 20-year career at Chevron, Garcia has spent the last three years as a substitute teacher at Santa Maria High School as well as coaching in soccer, football and tennis.

Garcia attended La Mirada High in Southern California and was an all-star football player and CIF track semi-finalist.

While attending Stanford, the soccer style place-kicker hit a 31-yard field goal in the closing seconds to vault his team to a 13-12 victory over Michigan in the 1972 Rose Bowl.

He finished his career at Stanford as the all-time leading scorer, was a three-time all-star at the Hula Bowl, East/West Shriner's Game and in the College All-stars vs. Pros. He kicked a school record 59-yard field goal against USC in 1973 and in 1991, Garcia was named to the Stanford All-Century Football Team.

Garcia is the brother of AHC men's coach Al Garcia.

Julio Molina has been recommended to become the new women's volleyball coach, replacing Meghan McCalip who moved to Southern California.

After a successful playing career, Molina has coached at the high school level for the past five years. He was the junior varsity coach at Mission Prep in 2003, moved to San Luis Obispo as the varsity assistant in 2004 and moved to Fresno Christian in 2005.

Molina became the junior varsity head coach at St. Joseph High in Santa Maria in August 2006 and for the past 18 months coached a girl's 16-year old club team for the Central Coast Volleyball Club.

Molina played at Cal Poly on a club team from 2002 to 2004 that finished in the top four at the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Club Volleyball Nationals. Before that he was a varsity member at North Hollywood High where he was a member of the 2000 CIF Los Angeles City Section Championship team.
