Pismo Beach

Sobriety checkpoint set for Saturday

The Pismo Beach Police Department and California Highway Patrol will conduct a joint sobriety checkpoint somewhere in the city from 4 to10 p.m. Saturday, according to the CHP.

Traffic permitting, all vehicles will be checked, but if traffic becomes too heavy, vehicles to be checked will be selected by a pre-set standard to assure objectivity, according to the CHP.

Sobriety checkpoints tend to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers on the roads and highways, the CHP said.

La Crescenta man collapses, dies

A La Crescenta man, who was intending to scuba drive Thursday with family and friends, collapsed and died on Tajiguas Beach, a mile and a half north of Refugio Beach, according to Capt. Eli Iskow of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The man, identified as 41-year-old Yoon Choi, was donning his gear to get in the water when he collapsed, said Sgt. Alex Tipolt with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department.

Emergency crews received a call of a possible drowning at 8:15 a.m. However, when rescuers responded, the victim was not in the water.

Instead, paramedics located Choi on the beach and immediately began trying to resuscitate the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Iskow said.

Choi’s past medical problems contributed to his death, Iskow added.

Witnesses told firefighters that Choi was suited up to go scuba diving and collapsed on his way to the water.
