SPORTSWIRE - Edwards fourth in Daytona GT race

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite taking several shots from other competitors, Santa Maria's Paul Edwards and co-driver Kelly Collins scored a fourth-place finish in the GT ranks at the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday night.

Edwards and Collins held their point lead over the GT field in their No. 07 Banner Engineering Pontiac GXP.R, now 24 points over the Speedsource Mazda RX-8 of Sylvain Trembley and Nick Ham.

The duo qualified 10th in the field earlier on Thurdsay for the one-day event, then had a big stumble early when a pair of Daytona Prototypes collided in the infield section, collecting Collins and sending him to the pits.

Edwards himself took contact in the latter half of the race, colliding with the Mazda co-driven by Joe Foster and “Gray's Anatomy” star Patrick Dempsey.

“In practice we had a strong 10th-place car,” Edwards said. “On that restart I got hit in turn three after avoiding a spinning car. I had to pit twice for repairs and that sent us to the back of the longest line, but still on the lead lap. After the banging and hits we took tonight, fourth place is definitely a gift. We will take it and go to Barber.”

The series resumes on July 20th at Barber Motorsports Park, outside of Birmingham, Alabama.
