Santa Barbara County
Legislation drafted for Gap Fire relief
Disaster relief legislation is being drafted for victims of the Gap Fire burning in the hills above Goleta, Assemblyman Pedro Nava announced Thursday.
The legislation will reportedly allow residents of damaged homes to receive a homeowner's property tax exemption while their home is repaired or rebuilt, and will allow taxpayers to deduct excess disaster losses not compensated for by insurance, for up to five years on income tax returns.
The legislation will also provide state reimbursements of local property tax losses to the counties stemming from the downward property tax assessments of property damaged by the fire, Nava said in a written statement.
“Property owners should not be penalized when a natural disaster strikes,” he said. “The state owes it to its residents and local governments to provide much-needed relief when a disaster occurs.”

Though Thursday night, classes scheduled to meet in Santa Maria were called off. Classes at Hancock's other campuses were to continue on schedule.
