San Luis Obispo

Residential fire under investigation

A suspicious fire in a residential home in San Luis Obispo did not harm the occupants of the house or firefighters when it burned early Saturday morning, Cal Fire officials said.

Furniture on the front porch of 239 Highland Drive caught fire and quickly spread to the rest of the house, according to Cal Fire. The occupants were alerted by the noise and able to escape, officials said.

Fire personnel extinguished the flames within 10 minutes, but the fire is under investigation.

Deputies: Cases of horse cruelty increase

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's deputies reported an increase in cases of animal cruelty involving horses. The latest, on June 19, ended in the arrest of Jose Maria Figueroa-Navarro, 45, officials said, after they found a 6-year-old bay gelding tied up in the sun on Thompson Road in Nipomo.

Officials encourage county residents to properly care for their horses and if anyone witnesses abuse to call authorities. The Sheriff's Department Rural Crimes Unit has created a free brochure titled “Responsible Horse Care,” which is available by calling 781-4578.
