Spike in horse abuse reported in SLO County

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s deputies have seen an increase in cases of animal cruelty involving horses. The latest, on June 19, ended in the arrest of Jose Maria Figueroa-Navarro, 45, officials said, after they found a 6-year-old bay gelding tied up in the sun on Thompson Road in Nipomo.

Officials encourage county residents to properly care for their horses and if anyone witnesses abuse, call the authorities. The Sheriff’s Department Rural Crimes Unit has created a free brochure titled “Responsible Horse Care,” which is available by calling 781-4578.
